It's kind of like the Atari Mindlink, only instead of using the muscles in your forehead, you control it by flexing your cheeks. It's perfect for today's more sedentary, couch-dwelling players, who can now play games on "that Ataribox?" while leaving their hands free to use their smartphones even more than they already do.

Honestly if they don't have anything working at E3 what is even the point anymore. How hard was it to make what could have effectively been a PlaystationTV in a nicer box? Sure, it isn't something most of us could whip up in our garage but c'mon they could have just hopped on a plane to Taiwain and gotten someone to pump the damn things out for them. Contract some desperate third party to make a cheap rollercoaster tycoon game, license the PS1 centipede reboot, make sure it launches with Netflix.

 

They're getting to the next console gen which means that they won't JUST be competing with the full-priced PS4, Xbone, Switch, Apple TV, Roku, etc in the "streaming and maybe play some games" category. They'll be competing with the PS5, Xbox 4, Apple TV's new game roll out, Google Stadia, AND bargain basement PS4's and Xbones, which are sure to have some major price slashes when their successors roll out.

 

It would have been nearly impossible to convince someone to buy a $150 limited (though cool looking) box when they were competing against 6 year old $300 playstations. I genuinely don't even know how they THINK they'll be able to compete with $150 7 year old playstations and $400 brand shiny new ones.

 

Its just a level of incompetence that honestly makes me sad. If there was a window for this thing - and I count myself on the more "optimist" side of this forum - that window is all but closed this E3.

I really can't imagine. If it is, they've got a horrible social media advisory group/team. I mean look, there's a lot of stuff in these here godless 720 pages that is on the scale from "not particularly funny" to "downright-tinfoil-hat-conspiratorial". But there are tons of companies that receive genuine hate day to day and their social media teams are still out there, doing their best. And that goes for individuals, too. Maybe they're quiet because they're busy as bees working on the unit. Maybe because they aren't comfortable talking in general. I don't fault the individual engineers for being quiet either way. But I don't think the silence is because of this forum.

 

Besides, I like Atariage. Lurked here for years. Still lurk mostly but comment from time to time as well, and there isn't a bigger site in the Atari community. But I don't think we should delude ourselves about the size of the 'classic' Atari community, the one that still cares about their products or history or whathaveyou. If you have an internationally recognizable brand name that is so iconic that it stands separate from the actual products you once made, the occasionally nasty (but usually milquetoast) commenting of a few thousand enthusiasts on a forum should have very little sway over your corporate affairs.

 

Unless, of course, you don't have anything to show except a box that relies on the nostalgia or enthusiasm of those few thousand - a product with limited mainstream appeal. But that's a whole separate enchilada.

I've been thinking the same thing for awhile. AtariAge is cool, but its users represent a very small portion of the web at large.

You're doing a fair job of ripping yourself up, and I dare say the median age of the average Atari-interested person is older than "kid" age. Not that it matters on the internet.

 

I like German cars. I won't own a Ford / Dodge / GM. I dislike them for decades. I don't pay any attention to the U.S. auto brands and certainly don't spend hours / days / years shit posting about them. I also am well aware of the atrocities of Germany. I don't post about that either... nor let it influence me about the product I pay for.

 

That's certainly your prerogative. You've posted volumes of stuff about how much you like "Atari." No one is stopping you. It's foolish to equate large multinational automobile manufacturers with "Atari," though. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo? Sure. But "Atari" as it exists today is more like a car dealer or a sticker shop. They don't make anything themselves.

 

But I guess we need to do the "Ford Sucks" thing here. You asked for it.

 

 

Doesn't mean Atari isn't going to get a piece of the pie, whether you like it or not. Pretty foolish to spend soo much time to hate otherwise.

 

They're welcome to try. Just as we can have a bit of fun pointing out their lack of professionalism and common sense as we see it. Question: if they were doing this for marketshare, "a piece of the pie" as it were, would they be using other people's money to fund it? This is an unimaginative effort to show that "Atari" can still play in hardware, and conveniently, it's also a cynical cash grab. It's a shame that anyone, even just 11,000 people, are falling for it.

 

 

I get it- for a basic gamer, a lot of other companies might be offering a better game, a better console, great- go buy it.

 

But do you get it, do you really? You just can't quit "Atari." What could possibly be of interest in what they're pitching? The stock price is flat, the partnership promises are dead ends, the products are cynical and boring. There's literally nothing on offer here except a logo, unless one counts lack of distribution or support as a feature.

 

I am also pretty sure a lot of eyes will be on Atari in the next week or 2. They know that as well.

 

E3 will be information overload while the big dogs all show off their latest and greatest. If "Atari" gets mentioned at all, it won't be a favorable comparison. They've had many months to put up or shut up. What's different about the next week or two? Saying "wait for e3" is like burying bad news on a Friday night in the hopes it won't get noticed.

 

 

End of this month the #'s will be released- I'm pretty confident they will be improved.

 

Not sure what this is supposed to mean. Quarterly financial reports? It's not as if they've put much out lately besides the licensed 1Up mini-arcade-cabinets. Just to be a contrarian prat, I'm pretty confident the numbers will be the same or worse. May the better pundit win.

 

 

Could I or any one of you do better with what they have to work with? Not sure.

 

This might be the crux of our disagreement. Fred, and cheerleaders like you, think that growing the company and exploiting the 40-year-old assets is a winning strategy. It's not that I want them to fail at business. I want them to stop doing stupid things that harm the reputation of the old company, and are bad for the retro gaming hobby. There's so much more they could be doing beyond yet another rehashed emulation collection.

 

 

The smart people are pretty much keeping their mouth shut. Are there things to critique? Sure.

 

The games press hasn't bothered to weigh in on this because it's beneath them to dignify it with any coverage. Mainstream coverage, such as it is, sticks to "Atari's" talking points and canned press releases, which have been light on information. The recent Stuart Varney piece with Fred was an embarrassment to all involved, and the goal of "tell the public Atari isn't dead yet" is not enough to cut it for a 2019 technology company.

 

 

I own and run my own business- nowhere near the scale or complexity of what Fred does. I get it. The people 'hating' generally have no idea.

 

Um, yay for you? You don't know us or what we know.

 

 

Do I like everything? No. But I've gone to a presentation, met the man, shook his hand, and he said it is easy for someone to Monday morning quarterback. He isn't wrong.

 

We've been following him as well. He's clearly smart, and articulate, and means well. We just don't like what he's doing with "the brand."

 

 

But he did...and the projects keep growing. Partnerships branching out.

 

Do they really? There hasn't been any news about partner efforts like Atari Blockchain, casino games, e-sports, or Qutie lately. Are they earning anything for the company, and if not yet, when?

 

 

It can't be easy trying to dig out of the debt of 2013, and admittedly with mostly a name and old basic games.

 

Again, why would anyone consider it honorable to dig through the trash of 40 years ago? Nobody asked for this guy to do it, either. What do we have to do to get f$scking Asteroids into the public domain?

 

 

For whatever it may be- Atari will release something, and as much as they dislike 'nu-atari'... well, whatever Fred is doing- is working - as the numbers keep going up every 6 months on the earnings reports.

Here's the difference. Here's what makes us NOT toxic.

 

If Atari SA actually got their act together and released something genuinely new, we'd support it. If they actually made a product that represented real effort, we'd respect it. This isn't like the fans who hate the new Star Wars because it's not exactly what they want. It's not like Dr Who fans who say your fandom isn't legit if you think Doctor x was better than Doctor y. Atari fans WANT to be made happy... so much so that some of us actually are thinking of trading our favorite cow for some magic beans.

 

What you're seeing in this thread is a bunch of people noticing that the company that owns the IP is considerably more toxic than the fandom had ever been.

Being slightly naive I was willing to support what I thought was an underdog effort to bring a once relevant company that many may not have realized was still around back to being something. I wrongly assumed that they had a plan and the people to actually build this thing. I always assumed it would be a mess. I really didn't even question the pre-order idea because clearly that helps gauge interest and finance the project. What I didn't like was that they choose to use a questionable crowd-funding site. But after months of no updates and some of the truth finally coming out, I realized I bet on the wrong horse. I tried to stay positive but they made it hard. Ultimately I don't think they started this project to run a scam but it is clearly going that way and instead of pumping the brakes at any point they just let it run at full throttle and are hoping for the best. Well, thoughts and prayers and the best intentions aren't going to make a console appear.

 

Now having that Feargal guy wrapped up into this thing at all was clearly foolish and really that should have never happened.

 

I just want my money back but I don't think that will happen and I feel bad for anyone who is still believing in this thing as the second coming of Atari. When ever what they wind up building comes out, it will be dead on arrival. It will be the butt of jokes for years to come. A novelty for future console collectors to laugh at and pick up on the cheap.

 

I really hope that someday the ownership of Atari changes and the fans and diehards can finally have a company that they can be proud of and support. But I don't see that happening for awhile.

No they wouldn't. That costs money. I doubt they'd even spring for an Industry badge.

 

They'd still be set up at the McDonald's down the street. Free Wi-Fi, and the coffee is cheaper than Starbucks.

 

Also, McDonald's has no tacos, and they fear tacos. (Caution: DO NOT WATCH THIS IF YOU LIKE TACOS! or have any plans to eat any sort of food for the rest of the day...)

 

Not that Atari can escape tacos in LA. They're surrounded.

 

Hopefully they'll be careful crossing the streets while they're here. With Smoak's beard blocking their view, they could get into an accident with a taco truck. Now that would be irony.

I did a similar thing with one of my older dragon cartoons when I wanted to show my disgust for Litton Entertainment when they replaced Saturday Morning cartoons with their boring educational shows.

 

But now here's the AtariVCS version.
