JBerel
With its huge back catalogue of classic titles such as Paperboy, California Speed and Pong, Atari could have a more nostalgic target market sewn up with the launch of the new machine. Pong? Whatever. Maybe you're looking forward to the Pong game show? I'm pretty sure most of the most enthusiastic Pong fans died off a few decades ago.

+Stephen
Strange update yesterday on Delaney Digital's YouTube channel (of RVGS and Coleco Chameleon render fame): Strange, because I still wonder if they're involved with Atariboxvcs. atari_2600_space_invaders_box1.jpg You sure that's for Space Invaders? It could be for a re-release of Boston's album.
Flojomojo
WHAT IF "Atari VCS 2018" is actually a deliberate parody, irony all the way down? Like if someone set out to make Plan 9 from Outer Space for real, just for the laughs?
pacman000
Plan 9's over rated (underrated?) Try something more along the lines of Invasion from Inner Earth: (Apologizes if the reviewer curses; I have the audio off on YouTube right now.) carlsson
I'm not sure if it has already been posted that Atari partners with Bayside Games for online gambling based on old Atari titles. Of course blockchains are involved too, so probably this relates to the previous announcement about their own crypto currency for gambling. https://www.reviewed-casinos.com/news/atari-moves-into-esports-with-bayside-games/ At least Atari has many legs to rest on, in case the VCS doesn't bring fruit just yet. Flojomojo
That's depressing. “Bringing Atari's iconic games to our platform is ideal,” added Joshua Barrow, President and CEO of Bayside Games. “We want to offer fun and simple, addictive gameplay that players can make money with. The classic titles of Atari make it possible to meet this strong demand.” There's another thread positing that "Nintendo ruined video games" by making them too kiddie and marketing them as toys. It would be grim if "Atari" were to drag games back into the disreputable gutter, a resurgence of the days when pinball was banned in many places. It's a little ironic that "Atari" is getting into gambling right when real game companies are under scrutiny for gambling-like "loot boxes." Other countries have regulated this behavior, it's not difficult to compel developers to disclose odds for winning. Once again, "Atari" is behind the times, skating to where the puck was several years ago. Fortunately "Atari" won't be successful enough to hurt the rest of the industry. Atari titles are scheduled for launch in the second half of 2018 across the PC, Mac, iOS and Android platforms. I look forward to vigorously ignoring these releases.
toiletunes
Will they have a Slot Machine slot machine? +Nathan Strum
Under the terms of the agreement, Atari will receive guaranteed minimum royalties and a 15 percent stake in Bayside Games. Ambulance chasers. That's the first phrase that popped into my mind just now. Atari will partner with anyone, slap their name on anything, for the potential of a quick cash grab. What it does to the brand's reputation is irrelevant. I'm just waiting for the inevitable press release where Atari announces their new live-action Night Driver game show, where Fred Chesnais will throw himself in front of moving cars, then sue the drivers. Contestants take bets on how many bones he'll break. Because SpeakerHats™.

If Atari SA's output were one-tenth as innovative and polished as that of Secret Exit, I'd buy everything they made. By the way, Truck Dismount Classic is free, albeit with this amusing disclaimer Please note that games on this page are from the age when computer programmers had sideburns. Compatibility with current operating systems is not guaranteed and no support is provided. That's how it's done. Don't try to milk your ancient holdings, let them be free. Not sure if they were Atari or Namco but I did see a number of video game slot machines the last time I worked in Las Vegas maybe 3-4 years ago. Call of Duty, Tomb Raider, resident evil, street fighter.. There was a Star Trek one where you did things and got credits. A video game slot machine. +GoldLeader
I might have it figured out! Some old duffer like me (ya know, 40's or 50's) sees Ready Player One and suddenly Really Wants to play Adventure! But they don't want to spend $50 on a loose cart on eBay... When they could spend $300 and feel like a Rich Guy!
JBerel
Their tie in with gaming machines makes sense, and anybody with any recognizable property has been doing it. It's all about sparkly, flashing lights and pretty pictures that make slot players go "ewww", sit down and play. When you've got slots using Wizard of Oz, Ellen, Indiana Jones, Miley Cyruss, Britny Spears, Star Wars, etc, etc, etc, it makes perfect sense to have an asteroids or centipede slot or similar. It's all just about having passers by think about something that has some meaning to fish hook them into playing. At least the games make for an opportunity for some decent graphics and visuals. Don't tell me that folks here would walk past some slots using the old artwork or playing the old sounds from the Atari hey day and not be tempted to put in a few quarters. It's not like you'll get to play asteroids to win money. You'll just get random blinky asteroids and space baddies flashing for you while you randomly loose your money. (Like supporting Ataribox.) I love how they call them skill based games because when you loose 10 bucks or so, you get 5 seconds to actually play a 25 cent game to maybe get 5 free slot pulls. P.S. - I once pulled 5 pork rinds on the Britney Spears machine, and all I won was some toe nail clippings and a palimony suit. pacman000
Bringing back Atari is sorta like bringing back Pan Am; it sounds like a good idea, but it's never going to work. Best to start something new. (Actually, more of Pan Am survives than Atari; their flight school was spun off as a separate entity & is still open today. I think it's owned by a Japanese airliner now.) Edited April 12, 2018 by pacman000
JBerel
Most of the online gambling is just a cloud version of their slot machines. It's all about how they separate you from your money, which is why they use the crypto crap to make you think you're not loosing real money.
