+darryl1970
I have read comments, here and on YouTube, over the past 3 years. I have made some updates to all of these games here! A quick note about the hacks: I have decided to place all of my hacks in one, convenient thread. As I grew up with my Atari 5200 and Atari 800XL, there were certain games that I thought had a little more potential. I had created basic hacks for a few of these games. I always thought that my 5200 Popeye could look better. Brutus didn't have a number "5" for a head in the arcade version. I knew I had drawn more accurate Mario characters on my 800XL. If only I could plug them into the games. I teamed up with Playsoft, who provided the tools and wisdom to make these games possible. Some of these games have other contributors. Tep392 helped us tweak the collision and touchy controls in DK Jr. I believe that Tep392 and Kjmann worked on the original Donkey Kong RMT sound version. I believe there is another member who helped Playsoft in some of the A8 to 5200 conversions. I am not sure who drew the giant Popeye head. If anybody has clarity on this, let me know, so credit can go where it is due. These are truly community projects, and I had a great time watching them transform. Playsoft did an amazing job of hacking display list interrupts, giving me a little more height area (eg. thicker 5200 Mario Bros floors, as well as multiple floor types). I have been holding off on releasing the latest Mario Bros hacks, because I didn't want to release as many revisions. I was also hoping for some upgraded sound effects for Mario, but there's not always enough time in the day. There's a bonus hack for the 7800 Mario Bros. I found the 7800 graphics tedious to hack. The characters were drawn too small and flat, and the game itself plays horribly. That version has the least number of animation frames, so the animation is poor regardless. It is my "Lipstick on a Pig" release. PhoenixMoonPatrol
I think there comes a point where you have to just say enough and be satisfied with all the hard work you've done. We appreciate it allot and wanna say thanks for making these games better than they ever were. Going to try these out in abit. Thanks for sharing your work and making these games better than ever!

Thanks. The purpose of this thread was to give all the hacks one central location for the final versions. These are intended to be the final versions. I actually had a hard time finding my latest/final revisions. These are it, unless I made some kind of human error I compiling them. I was just waiting to finish Mario Bros.. Thanks for the kind words.
Jinroh
Yeah man you've made some great games even better. I've had a lot of fun testing them and can't wait to play the final versions of your hacks for years to come. Well worth all your effort. It would be great if these could get a cart release as well.
PhoenixMoonPatrol
Don't worry,we have all the versions you've made I plan to keep the ones I have archived. Its fun to see the little differences that are made between versions. I do like that you slightly toned down the difficulty from the orig release in DonkeyKong, because there were times in the original rom that the a.i. was just too aggressive which made me wanna say WTF. Sorry about not mentioning the others who helped in these creations. You, Tep392, and Kjmann are MVPs. Thanks. MARIO130XE
AWESOME WORK!!! Can't thank you enoug for pimping some of the gems of my childhood. Popeye, one of the most underrated games ever.. I loved the arcade version but hated the A8 conversion. On my pal-machine it was ugly and unplayable. But now it's one fantastic game, even without the skulls in higher levels. Big big Thanks for all the hard work.
TwiliteZoner
Thanks again for all the work on these. They truly are 8bit remasters.
+Allan
These are really great. Thank you for doing them. Any chance you might try messing with Frisky Tom to make it a little easier to play. Allan
Tempest
Two questions: 1. Wasn't there a version of the DK hack with the original firefoxes? Or did that one get nixed after a while? 2. Is there a version of the 5200 Mario Bros. hack for the 8-bit? I know there's a rom out there that runs on the 8-bits (hack or proto I don't know).

Is there a version of the 5200 Mario Bros. hack for the 8-bit? I know there's a rom out there that runs on the 8-bits (hack or proto I don't know). 1. There was, but the arcade only has firefoxes on the Rivets screen. The older, incorrect, version is still in the original thread I believe. The release is the most arcade like. 2. The 5200 version was ported to the A8's, but we only hacked the 5200 version. Since the A8 and 5200 versions have information in different memory locations, Playsoft would have to hunt out those locations and make our hack match. I know he was very thin on time when I presented Mario Bros to him. He didn't really have the time to do what he did, but he got sucked in when he saw the graphics. As far as Mario 5200 conversion for the A8, I would be interested in getting a copy if somebody else (such as Glenn) would have an interest in converting it. On the a similar note, Donkey Kong RMT has not been ported to the 5200. I would love to have the intro and better footsteps on the 5200. If you know anybody who is knowledgeable in that area, let's get it going. I know Kjmann also said it would be great to have the A8 Frogger, with all the music, converted for the 5200. I am afraid I'll NEVER see Mr. Do hit the 5200 either. As much as I also appreciate the ColecoVision, another inspiration for this work is to flex a little 5200 muscle over the Coleco. The multi-colored enemies, prizes, etc., are really great to see in a home system from 82-83. Mr. Do on the A8 is incredible for its time! Sorry, I guess I still get a little excited. lol.
+playsoft
The big Popeye head comes from the arcade game with the background star removed and a little modification. I think Fandal also worked on the original RMT version of DK. Kenfused did the original port of DK Jr to the 5200. And of course the original authors who did all the hard work.

+Philsan
Thank you! Is there a xex version (128KB) of Mario Bros Arcade? EDIT What are the differences between DKjr Arcade and DKjr enhanced?
+darryl1970
Thank you! Is there a xex version (128KB) of Mario Bros Arcade? EDIT What are the differences between DKjr Arcade and DKjr enhanced? XEX version -- I do not have an XEX version. Maybe somebody can help with that conversion. DK Jr Arcade has arcade floors and screen graphics. Enhanced has updated graphics, similar to the C-64 Dk Jr game. The floors look like logs, and there is shading on the stumps.
Atari PAC-MAN Fan
Very well-done my friend! These are all superb hacks that do justice to their arcade counterparts. Thanks for making them.
Gibstov
Awesome jobs on all these. The Atari computer had the best port of DK on the 8-bit machines, and now it is almost arcade perfect.

Skeeter
Thank you for all of these. I've been away from my Atari while I deal with some personal issues but hope to be back at it soon. These games will be the first thing I check out when I do.

I THOUGHT I did, but I can't find it. That would be cool. Love to see the finished product. They are pretty much there for whatever, aside from selling them.

raphis83
I'm very like Mario Bros XE and love new design. Thank you darryl1970 for your efforts! Unfortunately there is one bug... When you start new stage, "POW" platform is not increasing. If you totally waste it, it will not restart anymore. It would be great to fix it and fully enjoy this game Edited July 22, 2017 by raphis83
