PERIL wip game

Recommended Posts

Still working on this one John???

The 16k/23 screens version is basically completed, I will not add more levels, only I will polish and debug if needed. But when the things goes more relaxed at work I plan to extend Peril to a 32k version with ,hopefully , 36 screens.

Same thing with Knight Guy.

Hi guys.

I was never totally satisfied with the previous version of PERIL, so a couple of months ago I decided to remade it from scratch as a 32k game, keeping the same concept, but with new sprites, playfields and some new mechanics too.

So here is the first public beta:

NewPeril20200110.bin 32 kB · 0 downloads

Testing and feedback will be appreciated.

James from the excellent twitch and youtube channel ZEROPAGE homebrew featured it in his show, so you could check it:

****** PREVIOUS VERSION ********

This new version is awesome (much better than the earlier versions, which were still good but maybe a tiny bit too difficult).  It seems to have just the right amount of challenge and even better graphics than before.  I love it, it is so much fun to play.  :pirate:

Sorry for the mild necrobump.

Is this game pure ROM or does it use extra hardware?

Have you considered using inertia?

I haven’t completed it but I already think it is one of the very, very best 2600 games. The lightning effect just blows me away.

Hi!

No necrobump, still working on it.

No extra hardware, just a bankswitching rom.

I have considered inertia, but is hard to implement it without make the game too hard.

I think adding inertia would change the style of the game too much, personally.  I think it works well as it is now.

I was mostly just curious. At first, my muscle memory expected a bit of inertia when stopping (like Mario games or Defender where you release the control slightly before you want to stop, but not to the extent of having to reverse-thrust like Asteroids). On the other hand the immediate acceleration is definitely nice here, and maybe it wouldn’t make sense to combine inertial deceleration with immediate acceleration. If difficulty is the only issue then it could be an interesting use for the difficulty switch.

I do think this is a flat-out masterpiece as it is, I can see how changing the control might make it too much of a different game, I have already somewhat adapted to the immediacy, and I will continue to adapt as I play it more.

I am super-impressed that you did this with ROM only.

Playing this WIP religiously.  Shaking my fist at this wonderfully annoying fun game!  Looking fwd to final release.  Do you have a donate site?  I've played enough that I feel guilty and would like to chip in.  Thanks.

Hi.

Thanks for testing, "annoying fun games" is like my signature 😛

I am planning new screens and hopefully I will complete this game soon, I want to reach 50 screens :)

If you have paypal you can donate through this link: https://www.paypal.me/vhzcgames
