0078265317
I just got confirmation that an av cable I ordered from amazon and a used controller from ebay is coming tomorrow. So I will be able to test. I got a cheap nba live 2002 from ebay disc only for three bucks. Not sure when that is coming. But at least I can get a pic tomorrow. Or maybe play a dvd. There is a menu at least even without a gane isn't there? Or will I have just a black or blank screen?
derFunkenstein
There's a green-themed firmware interface that will come up with no disc in the drive.
DragonGrafx-16
Pretty sure you need the Xbox remote to be able to play DVDs... unlike the PS2 you could not use a controller as a remote.

0078265317
I read online today you can use a generic remote. The dvd drive was made by rca so you can use generic rca codes and one should work.

And I opened it up again and took better pics of the dvd drive.

F34R
I got one from Goodwill a few months back. Working perfectly.
derFunkenstein
I believe that it just locks out DVD playback if it doesn't detect the dongle in a port. Basically it's working as a hardware key to enable DVD playback. Not an issue with a modded system, just something special for you guys who like stock firmware. What a pain. F34R
The two I have right now are stock. One was a launch system, the other is the one from Goodwill.
0078265317
I got the av cable today from Amazon and a controller from ebay. All is good. I got lucky and it works. Except my controller has a different end. Its round and not oval like my xbox. And I need some games too. I got nba live 2002 from ebay for 3 bucks coming soon. 0078265317
Found out I need something called a breakaway cable. I ordered a few. Otherwise it works great. I have a rc65 directv universal remote. I found their website with codes. I used this rca code (20522). It works. It asked me to set the date and time. I loaded a dvd and it played fine. The remote worked. Did not need the official remote.
DragonGrafx-16
Oh your Xbox controller must have been missing the connector on the end. All wired Xbox controllers (any generation in a way) have detachable cables to prevent damage to both the controller and the console. In fact you can connect any original Xbox controller with an Xbox 360 USB end and use it on a PC (with some help with some software to convert the inputs). derFunkenstein
You bought a controller and the seller didn't include a breakaway cable? Was it advertised that way? That's awful.
0078265317
There is a lot of third party but original controllers are hard to find. Anyhow here are the two I got. First was a little expensive but the second was cheap. But at least the first was supposed to work he said. And second not sure but it was so cheap it was worth a try. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Xbox-controller/173728155627?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648&redirect=mobile https://www.ebay.com/itm/Controller-For-Xbox-Original-Black/183622277009?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&redirect=mobile
0078265317
Also need help identifying a game. Last xbox I played was from 2002 in california at my cousins appartment. It was so long ago he won't remember. And he got rid of the xbox long time ago. I remember playing a racing game. Dont remember which one. It was not on a track. Maybe project gotham. There was a sharp bend and turn right away. Anyhow my digital camera back was not the best since they were so new back then and not as good as today. But you can clearly see the xbox in the entertainment center under the tv. Anyhow in the second pic the case on the table not sure what that is. Or not sure if that is what is on the tv. Or if the case on the sofa next to him holding the controller is the one on the tv. Does anybody recognize the artwork of the case on the sofa or which game is on the tv? https://mvvg.blogspot.com/2019/01/2002-xbox.html Edited January 13, 2019 by 0078265317
0078265317
I think I found it. Looks like (star wars: Jedi starfighter) from this list. https://m.ranker.com/list/best-xbox-flight-simulator-games/reference
0078265317
Also after I unplugged the Xbox for a few hours it asked for date and time again when I plugged it back in. Does that mean I have a bad battery?
RARusk
They don't have batteries. They have a capacitor that keeps the time for a few hours when unplugged. As somebody already noted those caps are notorious for leaking and causing board damage.
0078265317
Well its running for now so I wont bother.
0078265317
Took another pic of the inside and looks spotless. Except somebody wrote FTJ on the board at the factory. Has to be factory because there were no holes before and looks never opened. Edited January 14, 2019 by 0078265317
boxpressed
You can remove the clock capacitor now, just to be safe. Some people just yank it off.
0078265317
No need. I want to keep it as stock as possible. If it was leaking then yes. But no need now. I won't play much and will unplug after use.
DragonGrafx-16
I mean it will still keep time with the capacitor removed when it's plugged in. I really need to do some work on my Xbox. Remove the capacitor and fix the DVD drive so it opens... that's about it.
