BuckoBrand
So we kinda talked about blobbed carts in St.Nick by Funware! and HOME AUTOMATION confirmed that I would make this topic. Show us your blobbed carts and we will talk about them.
HOME AUTOMATION
Did I do that, sometimes when tired, I can become a bit facetious.I really do like the GAMES. I'm simply not often in any condition to play and enjoy... ...sorry! P.S. The blobs aren't completely boring, ha.
+Ksarul
I'll have to take some pictures of the blobbed boards I have. I'm sure Turtles will help on that project. . .

fabrice montupet
Absolutely not enough time to open all the TI-99/4A cartridges I own, I stopped to count them when I reached near 300. But here are two pictures I took some years ago: The TI "Mind Challenger" cartridge and the well known Tigervision one.
BuckoBrand
Nice. How do you get rid of the blobs?
jrhodes
You can send them to me, thats sure to get rid of them
+Ksarul
You actually don't want to remove the blobs, as the chips inside them don't have the normal protective cases. Remove the blob and you probably break a lot of the wires inside--and then the chip of silicon in the middle isn't held to the board anymore either. Opry99er
According to the 1958 educational film, "The Blob," the cartridges must be air lifted to the north pole. The blob is weak to cold.
fabrice montupet
Without a special equipment, removing the blobs is the best way to destroy them. And I don't want to kill these uncommon cartridges, especially the Texas Instruments "Mind Challenger". I have two of them, bought in 2003.I have never seen a shell for this kind of TI-99/4A cartridges. As they are prototypes, I wonder if TI ever made a such shell. +Ksarul
The blobbed versions of The Attack use a similar board--and those have only been found as loose boards as well. It looks like these boards were being designed as a cost-cutting measure, as that would seriously reduce the required size of each board. The question there is: does the move to blob cost more or less than the standard IC chip? If more, it would negate the savings introduced by the smaller board, if the same, it would reduce costs, and if less, it would reduce costs even more. I find this topic very enlighening, as there hasn't been much said about these boards in the past.
fabrice montupet
The COB (blobbed) IC were less expensive to produce than the standard ones. The Texas Instruments department of Villeneuve Loubet, situated near Nice (a town in France) has developped and studied some TI-99 accessories (such as the PHM2037) and educationnal cartridges. They worked on COB version of cartridges. It is one of the reason why three former engineers of TI used COB technologies in all the cartridges of their own low cost computer EXL-100 (Exelvision company). 2
+Ksarul
Merci, Fabrice! Thank you! I like the explanation of the inside of the COBs.

+Ksarul
That may be, Omega--but I prefer to read it in the original, as that broadens the mind. It is why I learned German and Turkish too. No mechanical/electronic assistance required.

Let's return to the topic. Not a TI-99/4A cartridge but a PCB containing 3 COB GROMs. They come from my 99/8 Computer prototype:

+mizapf
I think we can agree that French and German pose some similar grammatical challenges. (However, talking about the future is simpler in German, you can (should) always use the present tense, and this is what German speakers do wrong in English or French.)
