Solid state drive as Drive B: - possible?

I have seen pictures of Atari ST machines where the internal floppy drive has been replaced with a Gotek unit capable of reading/writing from/to solid state devices like SD cards and USB memory sticks. Can this Gotek be retrofitted to work as an external drive mapped to Drive B:? Maybe an old single sided SF354 drive can be modified to have a Gotek inside of it?

Yes. You can mount the Gotek in a floppy drive enclosure and plug it into the floppy disk connector on the back of the ST.

The HxC2001 can be used in the same way,

You can also do a mod to switch which drive is A, and which is B, allowing you to boot off the external disk.

Can I changes disks without having to reboot either the computer or the Hxc / Gotek?

Sorry ... I know that's a very mundane question but I don't have any experience with these devices. I'm still using floppies to transfer downloaded programs from my Windows 10 machine. :)
