How many games allow your score to DECREASE?

Recommended Posts

I was playing Thunder Castle last night with my younger son. I was unaware that the treasures have a purpose other than just giving you points so we looked up additional information about the game. Not everything you pick up is beneficial. For example, the comb cuts your score in half. It got me wondering about other games that allow you to lose points. Astrosmash came to mind immediately since you lose points everytime you allow a boulder to reach the bottom of the screen. The games also tells you what your ending and maximum score was at the end of the game. Are there any other games that take points away from you?

Also, was Astrosmash the first video game ever to do this?

Probably many. Star Blazer / Sky Blazer on the Apple II subtracts points if you bomb trees instead of buildings and targets.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons - Treasure of Tarmin: sometimes, especially in the lowest levels and when our hero is strong and highly armoured, powerful enemies can make him lose all the items in the inventory, with the ecception of what he is holding in his hands, and all the points. That's pretty annoying

Astrosmash, if you don't shoot anything.

Edit: I really should have read your whole post before replying :D I'll try to think of another.
