Mr Robot
I wanted to point out a new hardware project currently in the late design phase. It's called SIDBox and it plays retro music formats. From the name you can tell it was designed as a SID player but it has grown to include Spectrum TAP, Atari ST AY, Amiga Protracker MODs, RMT/SAP files, Stereo POKEYs are supported. The designer wants to include more formats like TFMX, he is also looking at including AMP support and even XEX! http://www.sidproject.co.uk https://www.electronscape.co.uk/sidbox/crowdinfo.htm Ms Mad Lemon has done a bunch of videos on it.
_The Doctor__
Needs a new name... it's light years away from where it started.
Gunstar
So this is a standalone device, like a retro pre-MP3 iPOD? A neat idea I suppose, though I was hoping for an external upgrade like this that is attached to the Atari and is run from and/or used by the Atari. ? I wouldn't have assumed that (nor probably ever seen the post) if it wasn't in the 8-bit section. I'm not berating you for that, it's just a natural assumption and disappointed enough to state it. Mr Robot
Yeah it's an external player, I only posted it here because it plays Atari 8-bit file formats so it's on-topic as far as that goes
Forrest
Interesting, but there's the Propeller based SIDstick that was released about 7 years ago that can be built for $20 in parts https://www.instructables.com/id/Pocket-Chiptunes-Player/ The Pocket SID audio player is a similar version https://www.instructables.com/id/Build-your-own-Pocket-SID-Audio-Player/ based on the $35 Propeller QuickStart board

Forrest
Johannes Ahlebrand wrote the Propeller object SIDcog that plays SID tunes using 1 cog. Johannes Ahlebrand also wrote AYcog, which plays songs generated from the AY-3-8910/YM-2149F using 1 cog - see http://obex.parallax.com/object/153 The Propeller can run 8 cogs simultaneously. So the SIDstick/SID Audio player hardware is capable of playing Atari ST and Falcon songs, in addition to SID songs. The player program just needs to be updated. Mr Robot
And the SIDbox will do Sid, dual Sid, pokey, stereo pokeys, ay, Amiga protracker, spectrum and there are more coming. It also works as a sound sampler for amigas, displays spectrum art, has built in ftp and the dev is a coding machine, new stuff almost daily. What point are you trying to make?
Forrest
My point was the Propeller solution was simpler to build (all thru-hole components), likely much less expensive and released 7 years ago. I have all the parts to build the SID Audio player. I'll work on building it and create a new topic to discuss. The SIDbox looks like a fine machine. Sorry for the topic diversion. Mclaneinc
I like the idea of it but there's so many portable players out there which use Winamp plugins etc.. In the end its down to the quality of the audio emulation and as long as the devices are ok to update then there's hope.....Portable Ballblazer etc sounds nice but its all already out there... +ZuluGula
Seven years ago, someone already did a pocket Pokey player. It's based on PIC32 chip and runs Another Slight Atari Player.
