Sealed game/Cartridge version

Recommended Posts

There are some games like Chips Challange for which there are three different cartridge versions - curved, flat, ridged.

Is there a way to determine from the box which cartridge version is in the box? (so locked boxes do not need to be opened). ūüôā

Based solely on my experience in collecting the games, here's a general breakdown of how the different cart styles are distributed in the different cartons:

Blue Lightning (PA2020):

Large carton could include flat or ridged cart

Small carton with gray vertical band could include flat, ridged or curved lip cart

Small carton without gray vertical band will include only curved lip cart

Electrocop (PA2021):

Large carton could include flat or ridged cart

Small carton with gray vertical band could include flat, ridged or curved lip cart

Small carton without gray vertical band will include only curved lip cart

Gates of Zendocon (PA2023):

Large carton could include flat or ridged cart

Small carton with gray vertical band could include flat, ridged or curved lip cart

Small carton without gray vertical band will include only curved lip cart

Gauntlet: The Third Encounter (PA2024):

Small carton without gray vertical band (Japanese) will include only ridged cart

Small carton without gray vertical band (all others) will include only curved lip cart

California Games (PA2025ūüėě

Pack-in baggy could include flat, ridged or curved lip cart

Small carton without gray vertical band will include only curved lip cart

Chips Challenge (PA2028ūüėě

Small carton with gray vertical band could include flat, ridged or curved lip cart

Small carton without gray vertical band will include only curved lip cart

Just keep in mind that this breakdown is not definitive.

One last tip: Sometimes it's difficult to determine whether a Blue Lightning, Electrocop, or Gates of Zendocon carton is the large-size or the small-size when looking at photos of them online, especially on eBay and especially when no other info about the carton size is given in the description. Simply count the rows of Lynx X's in the vertical gray band on the right of the carton: 10 and a half X's means it's a large carton, 7 and a half X's means it's a small carton.

Hope this info helps, and happy collecting!
