Jason_Atari
Does anyone know if a ballblazer or commando cart with the pokey chip missing will still play? And if so would there still be basic sounds? Thanks in advance ?
Shawn
Commando uses it for bankswitching, not just for sound so it will not work without it.
+-^CrossBow^-
Ballblazer only uses the Pokey for sound so even if it did work, you wouldn't hear anything at all on that game. I actually have a ballblazer I took the Pokey out of for my Mateos cart sometime back but I don't think I actually tried to play it afterwards to verify this. Hmmm..? Both games should run, unless either one uses the RNG of the POKEY.
SS
Ballblazer plays but is absolutely silent. Commando plays and has most sound effects present but no background music. I actually kind of like it better that way.

Oh, I was sure it used it for something like that aside from the sound. My bad.

So I have two copies of Ballblazer, and one (the loose copy) is completely silent, which I assume means there is an issue with the Pokey. Every time I am in the Atariage store and see the "you supply the Pokey" orders, I wonder if it's possible to check to see if the Pokey is still possibly functional but disconnected or something. Anyone know what I could look for if I'm not afraid to destroy that cart?
carlsson
Perhaps if you take the cartridge apart and try to trace some of the lines from the POKEY chip, you could at least tell if there are cuts in the PCB?
