Hi,

I found this picture, I wonder if it exists somewhere for the 800 xl ? 😍

Thanks.

Interestingly, I could NOT locate a similar design patent for the XL line, though I did find Regan Cheng's basic design for the 4-port 5200. I don't know why Atari wouldn't have filed a design patent for the XL line, except that perhaps the 1200XL's design was changing so much as it evolved that it just never got an application finalized and completed.

That's why I said good luck finding it LOL... I spent about an hour searching permutations for different Atari Patents. The search isn't very friendly.

Well I’ve done patent searches before so the clunky search interface isn’t the problem. The problem is, an analogous design patent for the XL cases just doesn’t seem to exist, or if it does it was assigned to a different company than Atari. Not inconceivable but highly unlikely.

BTW, I did find the design patents for the 810 disk drive and 820 printer, the one for the 5200 analog joystick. But nothing for the XL line.

Just be aware that the links you posted may well refer to actual patents, but they are hosted on a private person’s server.

The actual, official and legally controlling patents are hosted on the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office. :)

Absolutely...but as said before, the search engine is...well...not really user friendly :)

Ok it's not user friendly until you find this search tool : http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html

I tried to use "atari" as "assignee name" AND all names from http://www.atarimania.com/faq-atari-400-800-xl-xe-who-designed-the-atari-8-bit-computers_17.html in all other fields. I guess it's more or less what Jed did, that's why i hadn't more results.

Too bad. 😥

The USPTO database is actually searchable.  Here's the design patent for the 800 ("Colleen").

And the 400:

(Hope these links work - government websites are tricky!)

They worked, well done. I downloaded them as PDF and renamed them for easy access. Attached.
