I played it last night on my real hardware NTSC machine, and the music plays as fast as I always remember. So it's just the normal 16.7% slowdown any game will exhibit on a PAL machine that is synced to VBLANK. Ah, I see. That didn't occur to me. Thanks! abbotkinneydude
Hi @TIX! Amazing Work! The playability is much improved and the rebuilt graphics are just great. The title screen is also super charming and reminiscent of the original coin-up. A couple of comments: 1) I do agree with Atarimania re: the font being used. If you're not interested in using the classic Williams font (with a strong Colecovision / MSX feel), maybe use the classic ATARI GAMES (coin-up) font? 2) Considering you're building on the original game / engine, would it be possible to credit the original programmers on the title screen? Programming: Scott D. Smith Graphics: Courtney Granner Audio: Robert Vieira Their names actually show on the back of the original box (US Release). This was one of the first occurences of ATARI Inc. (Warner era) crediting their programmers. Again, thank you for the tremendous work. 3
Pengwin
Just after a quick play, I am very impressed. This has always been one of my favourites, and I like this new version. 2

This is much more than my previous sprite hack.. Moon Patrol was one of my first attempts in hacking, doctorclu helped me get started and I was hooked, I drew literally hundreds of buggies until I settle in the design I considered the best it can be in the limitations of the original game. So I released it and moved along.. but it doesn't leave my mind, I continued to draw assets of the game as I tried to learn how to hack the playfield to incorporate them.. In the rate I was learning I calculate it would take me 10 years to do it But then coder extraordinaire playsoft stepped in providing advice, tools and in many cases altering the code to fit in my crazy ideas !! We worked together in the past weeks to bring you the best 8bit version of Moon Patrol ! Done: new mountains backdrop new moon city backdrop new starting base new title screen new tanks, mines, lives left, moon plant, rocks (all playfield graphics) new colors bug fixes introduced by the new buggy and I'm sure I forget something.. It's a dream come true for me !! Enjoy Moon Patrol redux.xex 22.17 kB · 249 downloads Hi Tix, great modifications. Will the 5200 version get this treatment. Thanks for doing this much appreciated work.

EnderDude
Good job, TIX! I still can't believe how big this has become in the 8-bit community!
emkay
Hm. I always thought how good the "original" Version looked compared to the C64 Version. It looks definitely more polished and "finished" now. Hm... could you have a look at that ugly Alternate Reality: The City ? 1

Just one question, why the moon is so green (at least on PAL machines)? ? Because the moon is made of green cheese. +Philsan
Great work my friends! I would change the font too. You can choose it here: Atarionline.

www.atarimania.com
Just my two cents... The font itself looks great but, in my opinion, there's too much text on just three lines. I thought it would be better with the arcade lettering but it still appears way too heavy. Why not keep that great title screen and have the options / credits on a more airy screen?
+Nezgar
Maybe room to move the options text to the blank yellow area at the bottom of the screen, and put credits under the logo. I like the new font.
Gunstar
It looks like the standard Atari font still to me...just my two cents... I guess I'd need to see them side-by-side it the font has been changed. Edited October 25, 2019 by Gunstar
tschak909
Yup, Lyle Rains' Sprint 2 font is ALWAYS a winner. KEEP IT! KEEP IT! KEEP IT! KEEP IT! -Thom
TIX
Well Playsoft did his magic again and had the game detect PAL/NTSC and adjusting the music speed and colors accordingly !! He also alter the title screen !! I changed the fond to arcade classic, only compressed in height to fit in 6 pixels ! I also took the chance to edit the progress bar.. Unless we broke something in the process, I expect this to be the final version Moon Patrol redux (revision1).xex Edited October 26, 2019 by TIX 11
www.atarimania.com
Have to say this looks fantastic now! The only thing I would change is the order and centering of the options at the bottom of the screen but not sure it would fit: START on the first line SELECT and OPTION on the second line C and D on the third line

It is simply 3 rows of 40 characters if you want to lay it out.
www.atarimania.com
Yes, just with START centered. I don't know what others think but I believe it feels more logical and looks better.
