Thomas Jentzsch
The known ROM of Boom Bang (HES) clearly contains Motocross too. But there is no way to get Motocross running (without altering the ROM that is). There is some bank switch code inside, but this code cannot work. For other, similar HES multicarts they changed the code. However there are reports (see comments in the link) that people were able to start Motocross. So I am almost 100% sure there must be a 2nd, different ROM existing which has not been dumped yet. So if you have this cart (not the one with the menu) in your collection, please check if you can start Motocross using the right difficulty switch or not and report your results here. Jason_Atari
I have 2 copies of boom bang and there is no hidden motocross game. I tried all combinations of difficulty switch settings and color/bw switch and nothing.
Thomas Jentzsch
Thanks! Seems like the working ROM might be a bit rare. The more Boom Bang HES carts get tested, the better.
dark-aleph
I couldn't unlock any hidden Motocross on my copy either. Like Jason_Atari I tried all the combos of switches.
Nukey Shay
Using the switches won't work...the code at $FFF6 to $FFF8 (in both banks) reads BIT.w $00F6 (2C F6 00) instead of what I suspect was supposed to be JMP $F000 (4C 00 F0). Then both games are accessible based on the position of the difficulty switch when powering up the cartridge. Couldn't you get there via "frying"? That ought to lead to a random address in a random bank, right?
high voltage
Weird, the Neckermann version (2 pak special) works just fine with both games.

But there have been reports that some carts allowed playing Motocross. Frying might be one possibility, a fixed ROM would be the other one. And yes, the multicard with a menu works perfectly, but that one is using completely different code. 0078265317
found this on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Atari-2600-game-2-Pak-Special-Motocross-Boom-Bang-cartridge/382800224986?hash=item5920abe2da:g:K1kAAOSwpBddqaMR
Thomas Jentzsch
Thanks, but that's the menu cart. I am looking for the cart without the menu.

Thomas Jentzsch
Are you going to buy these or why are you posting the links?
+Spriggy
@Thomas Jentzsch @Rom Hunter Went to my local lads today and picked up a copy of Boom Bang. Tested, but sadly same result as Jason. Game works with every switch combination, which makes the IMPORTANT message on the label wrong.
Nukey Shay
Try frying it. Granted...it's only a slim chance here, because (going by the known good dump) the BRK vector is also wrong in the first bank (pointing at Ram instead of Rom). Rom Hunter
So, the Boom Bang does contain the coding of Motocross, but it doesn't fire up in any way on a console? In that case, I have to change the info on the gamepage.
Thomas Jentzsch
I still hope there might be a fixed version exist out there. But it seems that the broken (dumped) version is much more common. BTW: Why HES did not actively promote the 2nd games on their working multicarts (Challenge, Wall Defender)? Thomas Jentzsch
Looks like the are a lot of not yet dumped multi game carts in this auction, maybe even the Boom Bang version we are looking for. Also: Pigs 'n' Wolf Star Warrior Maybe someone from Australia is interested?
Dionoid
[reviving an old thread] I also recently got a HES Boom Bang cartridge, but no matter how I set the difficulty switches, no other game pops up. So it seems I've got another of the regular cartridges.
Thomas Jentzsch
I have to check the code again. It could depend on the hardware used. Some regular carts always start always in the same and some in a random bank. Edit: Nope, the dumped ROM will always jump to Boom Bang. Can any of them startup with the UNadvertised game on real hardware? Edited August 21, 2022 by Rom Hunter
