Rogerpoco
Haha! I ain't too good at this game, but I DID just sub a 100k score on it elsewhere last week, so I am "in practice", at least! I didn't understand the concept of "beat the leader", somehow I thought it would be "really good", or "really bad" for me, but you managed to find a game that is probably "right in the middle", so that's good!
Tempest
I don't think I've played this version more than once or twice out of curiosity since I owned the Atari 8-bit version back in the day. I'm curious as to how good I am at it these days.

Rogerpoco
Donkey Kong:108,200 Managed a new PB! (The old one was only a week or so ago, lol...) FYI, for those that may improve their own PB's past the 85k mark or so-the fireballs on the rivet stage completely forget that they are programmed to do anything in particular, and just kinda do their own thing, and CHEAT! They will jump empty rivets on you if you aren't careful.

It's just poor programming, they could have made them stop at the gaps if they wanted to. I think the lack of free space made the programmer cut down on the AI.

They will jump empty rivets on you if you aren't careful. On the rivet stages, there is a trick that's very helpful. When a fireball seems to be hovering right over where you need to get, try pushing up/down on the joystick (don't be on a ladder when you do this.) You will notice you can control them to move away from you. Once you stop moving up or down, they will do their little left/right thing, but be further away from you. It's not perfect and your control over them is limited, but it's noticeable and it does help.
Tempest
I believe I read somewhere that the fireballs (firefox?) act strangely at higher scores because they're reading other game code instead of their intended code. The array that holds their behavior values is so long (8 entries?) and once the player reaches a certain score it just starts reading whatever values are beyond the array. This is why sometimes the fireballs seem to stop or shake, they're reading values well out of the range they were meant to. 2
Tempest
56,300 I got this the first time I played and couldn't beat it in my next several games. Beginners luck?
Deteacher
111,200! I don't remember at what point, but I think it's around 120K, the fireball behavior returns to normal. I'm guessing the table that controls the barrel/fireball behavior resets at some point.
Lauren Tyler
27,700 It wasn't until I saw a ColecoVision that I learned just how Donkey Kong was supposed to look.
Deteacher
Here's another little tip for getting the most out of a hammer: You want to have it for as long as possible on the barrel stage and for as short as possible on the rivet stage. The hammers run out at certain times on the bonus timer, based on what the timer is on when you grab it. Here's a chart to go by: Start Hammer Time: Stop...Hammer Time: (pun intended) 4600-4500 4000 4400-4300 3800 4200-4100 3600 So, on the barrel stage, try to grab the hammer when the timer is on an even number to get that extra time with it. On the rivets stage, grab it on an odd number to get rid of it a little quicker. Hope this makes sense and I hope it helps. 1
Deteacher
Decent improvement: 134,500! The difficulty resets at 120K. I started a rivets level at 119,900, and the fireball behavior was still erratic. I scored 100 points and lost a life. I restarted the level with exactly 120K and the fireballs were no longer acting goofy. Oh, and the next barrel stage, the barrels hardly (if ever) took a ladder, so the difficulty there was reset back to 0 as well. Deteacher
391,300! After awhile, it stops trying and it's just a grind. I just made stupid mistakes. Lost my first life around 165K, my second around 260K. I'm sure I could roll this one now. It will be my goal to see what happens.
