Sugarland
If you really want to do PBI then why not have another machine for that and keep the 1200XL as is? They are collectable and hacking up the case IMO lowers it's aesthetics and value. Installing an 800XL mobo into a 1200XL case a bad idea. 1200XL's are rare, 800XL's are not. Just get an 800XL if that's what you want. You can get by with some internal mods for the 1200 too but they aren't very necessary either. The best option is the 2 EPROM OS upgrade previously mentioned. Suggest you keep the original ROMs inside the case if/when someone wants to return the machine to stock as its original manufacture state IMO will grow in value. 1
+DrVenkman
I quite like my 1200XL + U1MB + UAV. Since I have nothing in possession that needs or uses a physical PBI edge connector, this is just fine.

The 1200XL already fetches pretty good money on eBay, just as it is (plain-vanilla). It is SUPER good-looking and stylish, but NOT designed from the ground-up to be internally expandable (just like my 800XLs, minus PBI port), and any major undertaking will require removing shields, passive or active components, butchering internals, desoldering / re-soldering, cutting traces, spaghetti-cabling, etc. Nothing wrong with the above (for personal use), but expect pretty low commercial value for frankensteined-HW. In any case, if such major transplant is anyone's main goal, it is truly advisable to get TWO identical 1200 XLs: one where you would perform your planned surgery, and the other (untouched) to ease the second thoughts you will have when looking at the horrible mess you created on the 1st one. There are very. very few upgrades that will allow you to attain both objectives, on the same patient. :-)) Edited April 3, 2020 by Faicuai
YSG2020
I agree. There’s no way I’m hacking up a 1200xl. Anything I do to it will be reversible to stock.
MEtalGuy66
No one is talking about "hacking up" anything..

MEtalGuy66
That's a 16meg MIO. The protoboard has the additional logic for the addtional RAM adressing. It works, but we never made a ROM that supports it. We were instead going to include the 16meg expansion in a much larger scale "piggyback expansion" that added a whole bunch of extra features.. But that never made it past prototype either. I think WareRat has that protoboard somewhere.. Anywayze.. This MIO is also the very first one we got working. It has all the hacking and splicing under the board that got corrected in the second board revision.
_The Doctor__
That would never stop MetalGuy'66... he'd destroy and discard the octopus and squid! Tossing aside their carcasses and digging into some real sea food instead! Bring on the main course! :) Edited April 3, 2020 by _The Doctor__
