pusakat
What are your favorite Atari 8-bit games that used the keyboard only? Besides text adventures, that is. My Atari 65xe has a problem with its joystick circuitry. With the current quarantine and lockdowns, I can't get it fixed yet.
+Eyvind Bernhardsen
My current favourite A8 game is Lode Runner, and it can be played with the keyboard. Ctrl-K to switch to keyboard mode, I J K L to control, U O to dig.
Tinman
Multi-player? Galaxy Single player? Nuke War or Midway Campaign All from Avalon Hill. (I guess I was a fan of their games...)
+davidcalgary29
What about text AND graphic adventures? I spent weeks on Mask of the Sun (which I got for my fourteenth birthday), because there's an infuriating sequence near the end of the game (the lava jump) which required series of quick keystrokes to master a completely randomly-timed challenge. I think I also mainly played Wavy Navy and Hard Hat Mack with keyboard input, because I learned to play those games (and mastered the timing) on our school's Apple, which didn't have a joystick. The Phantasie series from SSI.
Wrathchild
Certainly Thrust or something like Everest Explorer? And if you are a real sadist then try The Last V8!
Gunstar
I played Spy Hunter with the keyboard before I modified a Stick Stand CX-40 controller base for the second "button" on the second port for smoke/oil slick. It's much more fun and easier to control with a joystick, as long as you have both "buttons." But I guess my favorite keyboard-only game(s) (which you can use a joystick with, but it's easier to just use the keyboard) is Alternate Reality (City & Dungeon). pusakat
Karateka can be played using keyboard-only too. Q/A/Z - punch high/middle/low W/S/X - kick high/middle/low -> - Advance <- - Retreat [Space] - Stand up/Get into fighting stance B - Bow

Maybe we should include text adventures in this discussion then. It seems that a good list of those would also be welcome.
+skr
I like Castle Defender from Matosimi very much and I always play it with keyboard controls only:

Gunstar
I don't consider text adventures to be games. They are entertainment, like reading a book or watching a movie, but interactive, like Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books to an extreme. pusakat
Spy's Demise works well with the keyboard. Has options to use joystick, keyboard or paddles. Also works better with artifacting. Probably because it's a port from the Apple II.

Jetboot Jack
Are any action games truly playable with the keyboard - I find that for instance Lode Runner is near unplayable compared with using a joystick. It's one key at a time that kills them compared to other 8bit machines. What am I doing wrong? sTeVE

I first played it on an Apple at school that didn't have a keyboard and it was great.

She can one hit kill you... yet somehow couldn't rescue herself...

If other's like it, that's great, to each their own. But I'll probably make another thread concerning it, so I don't de-rail this one.
