Only on some of my carts I see a small series of stamped codes. What are these?  Date codes?  Examples on Star Raiders carts pictured:

R 34 2

R 39 2

R 45 2

I found 7 brown cartridges with a stamp, as the first 2 digits don't exceed 52 and the last digit is always 2 or 3 I believe this is likely a WWY datecode. I also noticed that 4 cartridges with a CXL part# start with R while 3 other cartridges with an RX part# start with J. I have quite a few BASIC cartridges and only 2 of them are stamped.

BASIC  CXL4002 R 32 2

BASIC  CXL4002 R 32 2

STAR RAIDERS CXL4011 R 42 2

DEFENDER CXL4025 R 03 3

E.T. PHONE HOME! RX8030 J193

MICROSOFT BASIC II RX8035 J233

EASTERN FRONT (1941) RX8039 J223

Also what of the ‘R’ and ‘J’?

I don't know other than what I mentioned about use with the different part numbers, perhaps it refers to the location where the cartridges were manufactured.

Atari did this for the later SN labels, going through some of the serial number threads I noticed the following prefixes:

83S/Sunnyvale/USA (400/800/1200XL)

83A/Hong Kong/Atari-Wong (800)

7YJ/Hong Kong/Chelco? (800XL)

72R/Taiwan (800XL)

7VD/Singapore (1050)
