MAME HSC - Round 4/10 - Devil World / The Speed Rumbler

Wow,  I'm glad I was introduced to this one, Devil World.  

 

While it does compare closely to Guantlet, it also seems like a cross between Contra( all the shooting) and Gradius ( identical special weapon scheme)

 

After about an hour, I came up with this score:

Is it just me, or are the trees unfair?

Wait about a second after it flashes, then shoot in its direction to quickly dispose of it before the root grabs you and kills you.....avoid the root at all costs.

Last minute question out of desperation re Devil World: why do you seem to lose energy even if you haven't been hit? Are you actually penalized for using weapons too much or is it just a timed quarter-gobbling thing a la Gauntlet?

It just seems to be a thing, maybe to stop you from moping about the level (there's also a buch of unkillable monsters for that). It is annoying since I don't think there are any "food" items on later levels to compensate. The whole game seems a bit unbalanced/buggy, what with vials spawning in unreachable places or dying in the fire field on 2nd level even if there is no fire around. Still, I like it a lot.

It's funny, I only found out that there actually is a jump button in my last game, when I was stuck on the beginning of the lava level

 

Also wish I had more time for SR, just kinda finally "got it" today...
