Commodore guy79
So I have been playing the Dizzy port and its amazing but recently on the Commodore plus 4 Treasure Island Dizzy has been ported and its really well done - I was wondering if anybody knows if the people behind the Atari Dizzy port had taken a look and are making a port of Treasure Island Dizzy in the same vein? +MrFish
Treasure Island Dizzy has already been ported to the Atari 8-bit Computer Systems.
Commodore guy79
I know this - but the port on the Commodore is perfect 8bit port and i figured the engine is pretty much the same as Dizzy
+MrFish
OK, I see what you're getting at. Maybe Fandal and/or Irgendwer can provide an answer here as to their further interest in converting the series...
solaris104
It would be better to make a port from ZX Spectrum. In the Commodore version missing some features of the ZX Spectrum version.
Rybags
http://plus4world.powweb.com/software/Dizzy_II_-_Treasure_Island_Dizzy It looks like the Plus4 Dizzy games use hires + colour attributes for single foreground colour per cell. PM overlays could go some way to retaining that look. The games would be very good VBXE candidates. I didn't consider 64K Plus4 games much for VBXE since there's a fair chance of memory usage in our IO area that would need to be changed (Plus4 can access it's full 64K better than most). The other sticking point (and a big one) for conversion to stock hardware is that we can only do 128 characters.
Commodore guy79
I was wondering if the base code for Dizzy could be used as there isnt a big change between game play from Dizzy to Treasure Island Dizzy - I wouldnt be supprised if thats the Commodore plus 4 guys have done to be honest! Irgendwer
Only partly: Fandal did the coding, I helped with music, SFX, loading/title screen, in-game color distribution and strange suggestions... Just to share some development insights, this is what the A8 port also could have looked like: but this visualization principle, I also described here https://atariage.com/forums/topic/284296-new-game-port-in-the-works-laser-squad/?do=findComment&comment=4140797 was dropped due to various reasons.
Gunstar
I am a bit confused here; as far as I know/knew Treasure Island Dizzy is the only Dizzy game on the Atari 8-bit right now, but this discussion seems to be talking about the Dizzy engine for an Atari Treasure Island port? Wouldn't it be porting the original Dizzy using the Treasure Island Dizzy that already exists for the Atari?

Commodore guy79
they both look good - i take it the coloured version was too resource intensive... if i understand the post you pointed me to? I do have to wonder how hard it would be make TID or even perhaps FWD using your Dizzy as a base I mean you have it nailed its really good! and dizzy is a pretty big game one of the biggest certainly bigger than Treasure Island and maybe even Fantasy World! also I am supprised you used the C64 version I always assumed the Plus 4 was closer to the Atari 8bit micros - am I incorrect with this line of thaught? Irgendwer
Yes, resources and "Spectrum-like" color clashing were the reasons. Plus 4 without sprites is closer to Atari than C64 with sprites. But when the sprite use is very limited, C64 memory map and addressable space is closer to the Atari and more beneficial for a port. My excuse is a way too chaotic life this year... So then the discussion is another, high-res, version of Treasure Island using this game as the basis? Irgendwer
No need for apologies. I recently became an expert for chaotic life style.... ;) (Your guess about the discussion is correct.)
Irgendwer
Just got an answer from Fandal: He doesn't plan any other Dizzy conversion. Sorry. And I'm not that much of a conversion fan:
Gunstar
I'm pretty satisfied with just having the 2 versions we have now, and kind of like the fact that they use different engines and graphic modes for a bit of variety, etc. I haven't play the port of Dizzy yet, but I really like Treasure Island Dizzy, except for the one life thing. But it helps to have the map from Excel magazine. I still haven't finished it, but I haven't had much time for any games for a while now. I haven't had a chance to play any new games that have come out in the last year or so. I've downloaded all the free stuff, and purchased several hard-copy releases, new and vintage, through it all, but have yet to try any of them. I do like the fact that I'll be a kid in a candy store when I finally have a chance to start playing them all. Mclaneinc
Yes its sad that some of these games never made it to the Atari but with emulation being so good its just as easy to get the right emulator and play it as it was on the other machine, Hoxs64 and Winvice (or its other OS versions) are pretty damn spot on. I appreciate that its not on your favourite machine and we all like to see stuff done for the Atari but these emulators are out there, seems silly to miss out on a game just because the machine may not be of a particular flavour. The Commodores and the Speccy's have some really excellent emu's.. Speaking of Excel magazine, I wonder how Bob is, he was having a pretty torrid time of it, I miss the magazine but I'd rather know that Bob is ok.. I've no idea how Bob is doing, I stopped trying to get a hold of him last winter after sending him PM's on several occasions over the previous year to find out the status on issue 6. I never got any responses and gave up. I sent him a bunch of reviews that he asked for, to go into issue 6, but after a year of delays and he saying it would be out by such and such a date several times, all communication from his side stopped.
