oakcitycomics
Looking for a SF314 and have had zero luck finding one for sell. I know people use those Gotek as internal drive but can you also use them as an external drice on a 520ST that does not have an internal drive? ParanoidLittleMan
Of course it is possible and was done by many people. No wonder that can't find SD314 or some other, manufactured 30-35 years ago. Most is just broken. I let Gotek people to answer that part. Will write about with what I have experience - so called PC Floppy drive on ST: They are usually set as drive B, or by newer ones no jumpers for that, it is hard set as B and can not set as A, as Atari expects. But not big problem, need just to swap lines for drive selection on cable - as simple solution. Harder part is to ensure power - +5 and +12V . And even harder is to solve floppy change detection. http://atari.8bitchip.info/flomodam.html On page linked above is described exact problem, and solution for specific drive model. Really not possible to give universal solution.
ijor
It is perfectly possible to use a Gotek or a PC drive externally. The main, perhaps only, problem, is how to adapt the custom ST external floppy connector and powering. You can build your own cables. Or as many do, just adapt a 314 case and reuse the 314 cabling and power. You can even just drop the Gotek inside the 314 without doing any modification if you want.
