+JasonlikesINTV
Ok, I pulled out some boxes tonight. I'm far from an authority on this and my findings are simply what I found in my meager assortment of junk treasure. I found three sizes of boxes for the Intellivision I. • Large (19.5" x 12.5" x 6") ° Taiwan "1716" box (styrofoam) ° 1979 Hong Kong SN 531xxx Box 2609-0970-G1 (empty box only) • Medium (17.75" x 10.25" x 5.25") ° 1981 Hong Kong SN 770xxx (empty box) ° 1981 Hong Kong No SN (empty box) ° 1981 Sears SN J1072935 Box 3618-0970 • (homemade packing) ° 1981 Sears SN J1126984 Box 3618-0970-G1 • (empty box only) • Small (17.75" x 4.375" x 10.25") ° 1981 Hong Kong SN 1,468,xxx (styrofoam) ° Tandyvision One boxes (styrofoam) ° INTV System III boxes (styrofoam) ° Super Pro System boxes (styrofoam) So basically, the small boxes typically have styrofoam packing. I have yet to identify any official packing for the medium (including Sears). My large Taiwan "1716" box actually has giant styrofoam inserts. Also, in addition to having some stickers added, the box itself is actually a variant of the other large box I own (see pics at the end) If you're wondering why I have so many empty boxes, I probably have many of the corresponding consoles packed away somewhere, but there would be no packing since I'd have left it in the box. Pics! Small < Medium < Large Large styrofoam inserts inside the Large Taiwan "1716" box. Small inserts for comparison. More comprehensive box comparison. Large box variant comparison. Text in lower right is different. Large box variant comparison. White text at bottom is different. Ok, I've had enough for tonight. Hope this helps. 2
+stupus
Wow, nice work Jason. There seems to be just more and more variants. I guess like the games the systems are no different. I didnt realize there was a mid sized hong kong version as well. I thought that was just taiwan. I know the Sylvania is the large box size and the bandai the small. In fact the bandai is even slightly smaller than the small size but not really noticeably so. I know 1 of my large size boxes had cardboard inserts too, the other 2 i think foam. Im still baffled if they never made foams for that medium size....but maybe that is the case unless anyone can prove different. Thanks again!! +JasonlikesINTV
I never picked up Bandai or Sylvania boxes, though I got close a few times on auctions. It's interesting that the Bandai box is even smaller, but I shouldn't be surprised because Japan. I did notice small variations in the size of my smaller boxes when measuring. The Tandyvision was slightly bigger, but I figured it was just inconsistent manufacturing. They were all like 1/8 to 1/4" off in length from each other. Also, one of my smaller boxes (Super Pro?) had cardboard packing. I made a replacement one a few years back.

It's the best one of them all.. has that 70's futuristic look to it. BTW.. I worked at the Sears Parts Department in Hicksville, NY. We had tons of parts for the Tele-Games systems... A little fun nostalgia about the Sears box(es) the number that starts with "49" was for Division 49. Everything Sears had was by division, or department. So 26 was Lawn and Garden... etc. If I recall properly... 49 was Home Entertainment/TV's. Then the number after was the specific Sears part number. So the SSVA was 49-75022. Everything Sears makes had some kind of number similar to this on its boxes. Flip it over and you'll see the model number, which gives you "497.75022". The model number was again... Division "49", I think "7" was for games or something...most likely specific to the game system, then the part number to finish it off...which as you can easily see... matched the box part code. I think the boxes were cut in that spot for the box model numbers to send in to Sears to purchase maintenance contracts. It's the only thing I can think of that would explain why the boxes have them all cut out. Edited November 5, 2020 by IMBerzerk

While Mattel made their boxes smaller, sears went bigger. Edit: My mistake. It's the print that got smaller, tricking my eyes. Until i see evidence of foams or cardboard that went with it i think maybe it was that large bubble wrap. As much as it seems strange they would do that it would certainly explain why nobody has the original packing pieces to show Yet I used the bubble wrap from my Sears box as packing material for some outgoing items because I was told in that thread it was highly unlikely that it was the original packing material! Doh! Oh well. I may be persuaded to part with the box.
