StephenJ
I originally posted this in the C64 section, assuming it was a C64 game. However, since it's been suggested that it may be for a different 8 bit computer, I thought I'd post it here as well. Any ideas? Thanks, StephenJ
carlsson
I made a half-hearted attempt at matching the screenshot to C64 games before but failed. I also tried to run it in Photoshop to reduce it to 16 colours but didn't find the magic recipe to get the wanted palette. Where did you find the screenshot from the beginning? StephenJ
Hi Carlsson, It was posted in a thread on the [TheC64 Mini, TheC64 And TheVIC20 Group | Facebook] page...by Łukasz Gniedziński on Jan 13. I posted here to try and help. When asked, by a contributor to the thread, "Where did the picture come from?", he replied, "...While looking for a cover from another game, I came across this game by accident. I followed the link but found out nothing...". So far, no one has been able to identify the game. Thanks for your interest, StephenJ Edited January 25, 2021 by StephenJ
carlsson
Ok, sounds like a mystery. I see a number of people on Twitter have tried to help as well, so the search is going on in multiple channels. Someone suggested Faxanadu which is not a bad idea, though it would be a C64-ish version of the NES game. Quo Vadis also isn't a bad guess but it doesn't match. With so many people searching in different places, it should be possible to identify, in particular if Łukasz would reveal which other game he was looking for when he came across this one, i.e. matching keywords. carlsson
Ok. I assume the original resolution must be at least 320 pixels based on the candles and other details, meaning we can eliminate a number of systems. C64 and Atari 8-bit still remain, just like later systems like Atari ST, Amiga etc. In the later case I had a brief look on Lemon Amiga but didn't see anything that would match. The lack of a score display eliminates a lot of games.

Hopefully your knowledge and resources will solve this mystery. ? Thanks, Stephen

carlsson
Dark Castle is similar but not an exact match.

Billy Beans
The color of the bricks, the background brick textures, and the torches are very similar to Prince of Persia. But the character sprite doesn't seem to fit, unless it's mid animation.
carlsson
All official and unofficial versions of PoP that I'm aware of, have a big player sprite and two floors of action per screen. Other than the colour scheme, I don't think this one matches it to a big degree. Since the OP on Facebook could not recall what he was looking for or where he found the screenshot, plus that extensive search on some of the most likely systems have drawn blanks (and Google also doesn't know), I think it would be hard to locate but we won't give up! +x=usr(1536)
MSX or MSX2? It has that sort of feel to it.

If you zoom in on the character, he sort of looks like a robot/droid.
jltursan
Indeed, or at least a TMS VDP machine, the palette colors match.

doctor_x
That really does look like a neat game in sort of an Atari Adventure or Conan kind of way.. cool!

carlsson
Same developer, different game. Krakens was finished on February 29, 2020. This game was still in development on April 29, 2021.
carlsson
Btw Blackthorn tweeted about this unnamed game as recently as July 7 so it is still in development.
