Power mod smoking

Hi. I installed this power mod from Console5 with the quick disconnect and when I powered it up. It started to smoke near the capacitor at the base. The solder also started to bubble.

 

Any idea why?

It would only be smoking because of a short in there most likely. Or you might have used the wrong cap for the DC jack? Doesn't C5 still include a pair of other ceramic caps to replace out the old audio ones if you wish? Could be those aren't rated for the same voltage as the DC input would be. It will still work without the cap as that is just for additional ripple filtering from the power supply I believe.

The pair of caps for the sound are still packaged together. I didn’t install those.

And your sure you only have one end of each lead from the cap attached to the center and ground and one of the leads isn't touching both? I've installed quite a few of these and never had this happen so one of the leads has to be shorted to both somehow and heating up in the process. 

 

You are using an original 5200 PSU I assume?

My mistake. I forgot to remove this guy.

I immediately realized it once I connected the RF cable to the switchbox. Sparks!

Power mod works great now.

If your picture you had provided had been large enough to show that, we would have spotted that immediately.

You’re right about the bigger picture. I just focused on the smoking area and where it started to melt.

Despite the shorting and smoking, the 5200 is pretty robust and still works!

I know many who have smoked for years and still work fine.
