I don’t believe that an Atari 2600 “John Madden Football Game” was ever even seriously considered, let alone programmed. And the 2600 “Maddenness” game (assuming it ever even existed) wasn’t a Football game at all. That much is abundantly clear from the advertising. It’s almost described as a puzzle game. But in all likelihood, it was or eventually just became one of the other 2600 CBS releases with the Madenness name dropped.

Now, an Atari 5200 “Madden Football” game was hinted at, advertised, and even programmed. (a member here has the actual rom data and/or source code for it) However it would need to be painstakingly keyed in line by line (bit by bit) and nobody’s in a rush to do so.

But the key reason why a Madden Football game didn’t come to fruition until Electronic Arts first computer version was released, had to do with Madden himself insisting that each side had to have a full 11 man team on the field. Something which was very difficult to do at the time with limitations on memory and graphics. But Madden simply refused to put his name on a football game unless and until this could be done.

Looks like they were working on an X and Os football game. They actually made Madden Football box art. They scrapped the game and replaced it with Solar Fox for those that registered for Maddeness. http://www.ataricompendium.com/game_library/unreleased/unreleased.html#maddeness
