dwh
I got some Atari text label games with boxes that have "special edition" printed on front.I searched the forum here and looked thru my info I've got on my computer about Atari stuff, and I can not find a list of how many games were re-issued as "special edition".Any info would be appreciated. Atari Rescue Group
I've got one or two or those as well. Can't remember offhand, but Video Chess and Backgammon come to mind as the likeliest candidates. I think someone on AA before mentioned that the games were not big sellers and that Atari placed the "Special Edition" on the boxes to help boost sales of them and move excess cart inventories. I'm thinking the "Special Edition" phrase would be a lure for adults as kids wouldn't care about the Chess, Backgammon and other games like that. CincYnoTi
the special editions were mentioned in this thread: http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=36631 the box version with the "special edition" banner on the front is the style for the original release for several 1979 titles including backgammon, basic programming, championship soccer, casino, video chess and superman. later re-releases of the same title had the front banner removed, but often kept the "special edition" info on the back of the box. the special editions were actually the original release (text label carts) and that banner was removed in the latter release boxes.
