Wrathchild
Wrathchild, is the cartridge conversion proving more difficult than you had thought? I have been making a quick visit here once or twice a month and have seen no updates from you, though I could have missed something. No, just unable to put much/any focus to it currently, e.g. its 1am and I'm logged into work to oversea some things... Rats! Don't give up hope though Best wishes, Mark
ARO2
Here are a few AR music things I found on the machine here... AR MUSIC PAGE Yes, in a way AR-City did suck you in deeper to a plane that games today don't approach. I remember fondly the daily lunches spent with Phil at the Pot Belly Deli in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii... We would eat and talk about AR development for hours. I'd drive Phil to his apartment and head home... Both of us would then work alone on AR until lunch the next day. Casual players make up a large chunck of most multi-player games today. Things like perm death and realistic approaches to weight, weather and wellness complicate the $$ side of the business model. I think we all understand... I think we also understand that games which use "death" as a strategy for gameplay are missing the thrill of knowing real danger around every corner. Trilog
Here are a few AR music things I found on the machine here... AR MUSIC PAGE Gary, It's great to hear from you on this forum. Thanks for the webpage link - I was going to ask if the music for ARO was still available. I think AR has the best selection of music of any game. Could I also ask if you have any objections to me using your music in my SDL AR port? I'm capturing the music using the save options within the emulators and then converting to OGG format (though I might switch to MP3 if compatibility tends to be better across different SDL platforms). Thanks, Guilherme
eobet
Hello Mr. Gilbertson! Glad to see that you're still around (though sadly Mr. Price is still mysteriously silent). You left us on the mailing list without a word, and we were a bit worried! I'm downloading one of these music videos now, and it will be interesting to see what it is. Stop by the new mailing list some time if you wish: http://www.avatardesign.net/alternatereality/ Hope to see you around more often!
Xebec's Demise
Here are a few AR music things I found on the machine here...924521 In case you missed this question, it was specifically for you: I would also like to know whether your music was composed to be heard at the XL/XE slower PAL AR Hour = 3:50 or the faster NTSC AR Hour = 2:50 per AR Hour, which is much faster. There seems to also be a third timing with the NTSC Atari 800 at 3:00 even. The official documentation states that an AR hour = 4:00, so we were theorizing that you and Phil may have originally designed the game on a PAL Atari. Thank you for the media on your web. Keep them coming, we are gobbling them up like a Thanksgiving dinner!

paradigm76
*This post has been updated with Alternate Reality Links below.* *If you have any good links please share them and they will be added to this post.* http://home.comcast.net/~joyceo0/flamingdragontavern.avi (For instructions on running the game, jump to the next post, post #2) An avid gamer, I am up to date on all the latest games, but Alternate Reality: The City is absolutely my favorite game of all time. I recently started up a new Alternate Reality: The City character and boy was it an extreme challenge and lots of fun. Remember how advanced and realistic this game is; perma-death, the need to eat, drink and sleep! I am currently playing the Atari 8-bit version on my PC with the free Atari800win Plus emulator. I have tried all the other AR versions i.e. Atari ST, Amiga, Commodore 64, PC, but it is specifically the Atari 8-bit version that I am referring to as the best game ever. When the game was ported over to other systems by third parties the game seems to have lost much of the magic and complexity of Philip Price's original Atari 8-bit programming. The difference is the immersive-ness, realism and feel. Even Alternate Reality: The Dungeon for Atari 8bit does not have it. The Dungeon seems more complex, by offering quests and more control, but is it really? Not even close! If you can remember arriving at the The City floating gate, hearing the wind whistle through the town square, the background sounds of a bustling town and the sun slowly rising overhead, then you know what I am talking about One time, after years of play, one of my characters in AR: The City for the Atari 8-bit got Scurvy! Presumably, this was from not eating any fruit, as all I ate was Food Packets & Water Flasks. I was blown away – a game aspect that would not be possible to discover until after years of consistent play and the remote chance that I did not drink any fruit juice or have a single bit of fruit in a tavern. This has never happened to any of my other characters ever and I have never read about it in any of the cluebooks, faqs or websites about the game! What else waits to be discovered?. This all leads me to believe that the difference was Philip Price, as he is the creator of the game and the programmer for the 8-bit version, exclusively. He was way ahead of his time and so was AR: The City. Simply, Genius! ” Keeping track of characters' blood alcohol level, disease incubation time, neural and blood poison was not too difficult. It was fun to have a character's reaction time decrease as they became intoxicated, as was the wobbling and finally the blackouts.” – Philip Price on Alternate Reality: The City Alternate Reality Links: Dedicated AR Sites: http://www.eobet.com/alternate-reality/ http://kang.aroo.tv/ar/ http://web.archive.org/web/20010602133331/...om/ar/index.htm AR Developers: http://www.dadgum.com/halcyon/BOOK/PRICE.HTM http://www.dadgum.com/halcyon/BOOK/GILBERT.HTM http://www.cc.utah.edu/~krw8466/misc.html http://groups.google.de/group/comp.sys.ata...47412d077497273 http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=72948 http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=72952 Reviews: http://www.gb64.com/oldsite/gameofweek/11/...eality-city.htm http://www.explore-games.com/games/A/Alternate_Reality.html http://www.atarimagazines.com/v3n7/Coming_Adventures.html http://page6.org/archive/issue_21/page_49.htm http://www.qlam.com/atari/s_altreality.html http://www.ataritimes.com/8-bit/reviews/altreality.html Tips & Cheats: http://home.flash.net/~rayearle/Afiles/AltrReal.html http://home.wanadoo.nl/retrogames/600800tips.htm Miscellaneous: http://www.marktaw.com/reviews/AlternateRe...yTheVideoG.html http://home.uchicago.edu/~djm2/archives/se....02/game.addict http://www.jb.org/thoreandan/ http://www.atarimagazines.com/v3n5/painter.html http://archive.bibalex.org/web/19980505204...atereality.com/ Atari 8-bit Emulator http://atariarea.histeria.pl/PLus/index_us.htm http://numen.scene.pl/download/atari_roms.zip Downloads & Images: http://www.eobet.com/alternate-reality/files/index.html http://idiology.com/8b/bacardi/Datasoft/datasoft_1.html http://www.atarimania.com/detail_soft.php?...VERSION_ID=6021 http://www.atariarchives.org/cfn/05/10/0015.php http://www.thelegacy.de/Museum/3661/ http://www.lemon64.com/index.php?mainurl=h...php%3FID%3D3160 http://www.io.com/~parody/commies/sids/sidsters.html http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/xlsearch/x...ity&sortby=Name http://web.archive.org/web/20040811022952/...fonts/index.htm http://home.comcast.net/~joyceo0/arview7.zip http://home.comcast.net/~joyceo0/arcityviewer.exe 852518 Hi, i tried all the set up steps and i still cant get the game to start for me, i put the cartridges in the D1 and D2 slots and then press F5 and i get a rom load error and it asks me to check the rom settings under atari/rom images menu. classics
Is it just me, or do Atari 8-bit computer setups seem to be going up in price on eBay lately? You get what you pay for; buy the C64 version and you get crap, buy the Atari version and you get the original and best. Though, I sure would like to find a NIB copy of both the City&dungeon. I have the original disks for both, but not all the disks work, so I have some back-ups. I just want NIB for my collection, but I don't think I'll be paying that much for them. Xebec's Demise
I found a brand new sealed in the box AR City for Atari 800 online and placed an order for it, it was only $20. But then a couple days later the guy wrote me back saying that the box was actually now open and asked me if I still wanted him to complete my order. Of course I wrote back, yes! Then he replied a day or so later that it was no longer available and issued me a refund. Flake! He probably opened it, played it and then decided to keep it. Arrgh!
