Ok. Here is my latest mod..

myxe.jpg

Used super low profile, heavy duty momentary pushbutton switches that I had left over from when I rebuilt my Guitar foot controller about a year ago.

Had holes for the additional function key guide posts precision milled through the keyboard mech, and then mounted the switches, and wired them (with 30ga kynar, inside the keyboard mech) to the appropriate pins to get the (1200XL) F1 - F4 decoder combinations.

Upper case half was precision milled (by my buddy, CHris) for extra function keys at 3c Machine & Instrument Co. in Houston.

Shortened the 130xe nameplate and cut the adjoining end of it to the exact profile of the edge of the Fuji symbol, so you cant see the seam.

WHat you guys think?

So...have you installed those proper function keys I sent yet? I'd like to see a pic, side-by-side with the first pic here, for comparison.

Hey anyone who was interested in how I did the 130XE F1 - F4 key hack, heres a pic of how I did the keyboard.

keyhack.jpg

The part where the microswitches are mounted was cut from another XE keyboard.

The wire near the bottom is my Hardisk Activity LED and has nothing to do with the F-keys mod.

Ahh, yes. I was wondering that, and then I saw the pic and was like; " That's injection-mold formed holes, not machined! I don't remember any XE keyboard with those extra key holes..then I read and then noticed the cuts...cool idea.

Actually, Ive been so busy, I havent popped the st f-keys on it yet. One thing I notice is that they are missing the "guide posts" that the XE F-keys have. Theres the "Gender difference" (which isnt that big of a deal).. But also, the St keys are actually about half a milimeter wider than the XE keys, and about 1 mm thinner (top to bottom).. So Ill have to take all that into account and probably do some more minor machine work to the keys, themselves. Im hoping the width difference wont cause much of a problem, as the spacing between the XE keys is about a mm... Im probably just gonna have to make some highly customized key-plungers to get the height correct.

The key mechanisms, themselves work great though. Its kewl as hell to be able to turn off screen DMA any time you want, or disable the keyclick at will. And of course, they also double as cursor navigation keys (that dont require CONTROL to be pressed).. Its turned out to be quite a kewl addition to the machine..

THe guy that has done most of the machine work, is so pumped on it, that he is talking about bringing a small "baby" bridgeport mill over here and seting it up in my garage. (I say small.. Its about 800lbs. and has a 10 horsepower DC drive motor on it). SO if he does that, Ill be able to machine just about anything at will.

Maybe next, I'll add a second row of "silver" function keys in between the normal function keys and the keyboard on an 800XL..

(...) But can you give me info on surfing the web and using IRC. I don't have Linux on my PC but I may be getting an old laptop - I'd love to chat on IRC with the Atari.

Thanks.

This is a much Linux-oriented question, and may not belong here...

-but fast: if your Laptop has ethernet: good

-if it has CD-ROM: better (if not, you have to use floppy's).

-install debian-Linux (or any other, but debian is my favorite) (it's on you to learn how to do this) (you don't need to install the "Desktop-System")

-in

/etc/inittab

remove the "#" before ...:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS0 -L ... line (I don't know exactly, but you'll find it)

-connect a SIO2PC - cable to your serial port (COM1 in DOS/Windows, ttyS0 in Linux) - from now on, you don't need the computers monitor/keyboard anymore

-with

aptitude

you can install: irssi (irc-client), lynx (internet browser), links2 (internet browser, supporting frames and tables), mutt (email), centericq (ICQ, MSN, and other instant messengers) (aptitude only works for the root-user. If you can't log-in as root (from the ATARI), log in as user and became root with

su

)

I'm not even going to try!!! LOL

Why not? It doesn't matter if you only have a few games, everyone is welcome to show pics of their stuff in here.

Wow, was it really early 2007 when I made this topic?

Anyway, I can do better than pics, I've got videos. :)

Ross,

The videos are a trip. You seem so calm about your subject matter, but oddly I sense that kid in a candy store undertone.

If I'd make Atari videos my wife would have me taken away by men in white coats. :)

I've been watching the vids from Ross today as well and enjoying them quite a bit. I've got them going in the background while working on a somewhat difficult electronics project (various upgrades to an old toshiba libretto). I'm finding these to be very interesting (and almost calming or soothing) as Ross describes how he acquired this or that bit. Particularly the clips describing the games on tape: some don't work for various reasons, but were acquired for a such a small price, and of course are absolute classic games anyhow... the way he lingers on Journey to the Planets, almost sadly fingering the minor box wear after 25 years of use... Bottom line is that its clear how much Ross appreciates his items and his happiness just sort of flows out of the video. Thanks for sharing Ross!

I totally agree. His inflection, though subtle, has elements of calmness, sadness, reflection, and joy all at once. Very difficult to describe. The one thing that is obvious is that he truly loves and cherishes his collection. More than that he cherishes the joy the games and equipment brought him as a kid. Its apparent that the memories of time spent with his Atari changed his life. His videos aren't about gameplay screens or flashy equipment. Its a view into his soul.

Kudos Ross for being brave enough to share.

Thanks guys. I never knew this was how people saw the videos.

Yes, the Atari 8-bit and a lot of the games do mean a lot to me, it's what I grew up playing, and the games were/are just great, and they now have the extra feature of being very nostalgic for me.

My Atari 800 is shown in the beginning of this video...

Mostly looks like a typical 800, but in this video you see the wires running around the side, which is the 512K XE mod, and it also has the numerical keypad directly mapped to the regular keyboard (thanks to Rix at More Than Games).

I like the beige/pre-XL stuff. :D And like Star Raiders.
