How many 2600 games were officially released?

Currently I'm at 145 games not including some lots I have coming from eBay

What percentage is this of the TOTAL officially released?

Anyone here own EVERY game ever released for the 2600 not including protos or label variations?

How many peripherals and controllers were released? (I can think of regular joysticks, wireless sticks, paddles, driving controllers, keypad, booster grip, that controller thingy for the surfing or exercise game whose name I can't remember, light gun, was there a drawing pad of some sort?)

Are there games that are NOT pirated that were released only outside the US?

Are pirate games considered "official?"

I'm sure this was all probably discussed before but I can't find it all in one place

If you stuck with the major companies, not all the little ones remaking the same game over and over, then you're probably looking at somewhere near 700. I'd check with Marco. He'll eat anything... oh, that's Mikey. Marco OWNS everything. Some people don't consider Sears games that are repeats of Atari games as individual games. I actually consider them. Also, do you then consider the homebrews? And all the new pirates coming out. That's the problem with this. I can take any game and make a label and call it a pirate. It's pretty sad. If people would stop buying these things, they'd stop making them. Personally I think there should be a cutoff date, say early 1990s. Anything coming out after that doesn't count.

It depends on what country you are looking at. I am new to this Atari 2600 thing, but there's a lot of label variations, pirates, and Sears stuff out there, and I prefer to offer my own insight...

Some things of note for USA collectors:

I don't see why Zellers games should count in the USA, they came out in Canada, and are variation/pirate carts.....

"Air Raid" is not even a game, it's basically a hack job and someone made up the name, but it suddenly is worth all this money, and no box/manual exists? So peace out to that one.

Sears games SHOULD count, even if the majority of them are variations of existing games...

None of these 32 in 1 multicarts, Brazilian stuff, or aftermarket releases should count towards an original Atari 2600 set for the USA....

I think there has to be close to 600 games in the USA with all the variations and a HELL of a lot less without.

Stuff like Mangia, where there's what, one or two NTSC copies known to exist? It's ridiculously tough if you want to collect "everything".

Personally, I am trying to obtain a decent selection of boxed games sans the Sears duplicates and variations....I've got close to 400 boxed games, and there's not really that many more to go for me that are not variations of some sort...(I think I need around 40 or so games to be where I am happy)

If you are a collector of the stuff "worldwide", it's not really going to be possible to obtain everything...

I'm talking about the period 1977-1992.

What games were released in 1991 and 1992?

There's the 1991 re-release of Missile Command (coming soon in our database).

And HES re-released some oldies under different names in 1992:

Well, you may want to go by the US releases listed in the Digital Press guide. With that I add a few titles from companies that were sort of foreign. Like the Atari 32 in 1 is included. I don't include the CBS Coleco games, though I'm looking to fill in that collection. In fact I have more boxed versions than regular Coleco games. Since I typed all my games in an Access DB, I entered the list directly from the DP guide. So I'm going to run a query of 2600 games right now and see what I come up with.

Ok, it gives me 518 total. I have the Action Pak, Racing Pak, and Back to School Pak. listed, so if you subtract those three, you get 515. I also included the 2 newer Intellivision games, so take those two out, you get 513. I also included a different label for Pele's Soccer, but I have that as missing. Don't know if it's the game or the box with the variation though. I'm missing 69 games from the 518. I included Telegames in the list, including the foreign releases I believe. So Rom Hunter is pretty accurate with the 500+.

I believe the number I have is 525. Or maybe it's 515, I can't find my list at the moment. Anyway, it's a really conservative list, but it's still surprising how low the number is. That's even counting games released for more than one company. I'm not sure what the total number of different games is.

well i for one would like to know, definitively, all the titles actually -verifiably- released at us -retail- for the 2600.

and then as an addendum, id like to know the total # of unique titles released for the 2600 around the world, only counting a title once on it's first instance, and not counting any pir8s/hacks since.

If you are a collector of the stuff "worldwide", it's not really going to be possible to obtain everything...

I would suggest that it would be very difficult to obtain "everything" even if (for whatever reason you might have) you were to limit yourself to US releases. Apart from anything else, no-one can actually agree on what constitutes a complete "US released" collection. The "Air Raid" disussions are an example of this.

Some people are interested in carts only, some in carts and manuals, some in complete packages. Some only want titles that were originally available in a single geographical area, some don't want non-game titles, some don't want paddle games. Some people collect only sealed games, some always open sealed games. Prototypes? Homebrews? Hacks? Official hacks? Pirates? Label variations?

My point is that there's no single definition of "everything" when it comes to collecting. No-one knows, for sure, the exact extent of what was, and is, available. Each collector has to determine his or her own collecting horizon - and this can, obviously, change over time.

I wouldn't call this a "release" list, it's more of a "variant" list, but make of it what you will since other than a few oddball label varitions I'm only missing R9's and R10's at this point.

I don't see why Zellers games should count in the USA, they came out in Canada, and are variation/pirate carts.....
Sears games SHOULD count, even if the majority of them are variations of existing games...

Zellers are indeed pirates, but should be included because they are NTSC format. If you don't count Zellers you should also exclude Panda and Froggo Games as they are pirates too. Zellers is noteworthy for having the only NTSC release of Challenge by HES, and Time Warp by Funvision. All the Sears carts except Submarine Commander, Stellar Track, and Steeplechase are just label variations of the Atari releases. If you are just counting originals (roms that have more then the title changed) you should also include all the PAL, and PAL-M titles that never got released as NTSC.

If you are counting the label variations then you should count NTSC titles that came out in Canada, but never the United States. Otherwise you have to take this off your list too, as it was a Canada only:

What we're trying to do is remove PAL only companies, which everyone is calling international or foreign.

Pardon? What we're trying to do is remove the nationalistic idea that only US stuff is cool to collect :P

Cheers,

Marco
