ManShowBoy
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MqSOZGCcFYU Crysis. This game will be the first truly next gen game IMO. When looking at the video I want to laugh at PS3/360 games being called "next gen" because they arn't. This is next-gen. wow
Paranoid
Mmmmn. So the next gen is MORE FPSers with ever MORE imagination robbing detail... *yawn*. "And look here, if you shoot your enemy, and pull down his pants... you can actually see and count each individual hair on his ass. How is THAT for realism"... Paranoid
I guess I'm being cynical. It is a step toward the emersive kind of VR experience I see as the next KILLER APP in gaming. Something with a set of wrap around googles that can detect your eye movements, maybe that works in concert with a well executed Wii or Powerglove type of controller. That is before we go wet-link and just start hallucinating our games (which is going to be a field day for the porn industry). So, I suppose that blowing leaves and trash and enemies really talking North Korean to each other and broken English to you... and a highly interactive virtual world where trees may fall and enemies may use them for cover... *is* a fairly evolutionary step in the right direction. And I guess the FPS is the logical vehicle to carry us in that direction. But I'd sure like to see something ELSE. With all the options and menus they've put into the gun and the character, it really strikes me that they could have maybe put some effort into a more realstic hand-to-hand melee system, a spell and armor system, and made a revolutionary, *must have* C-FRP. Something as paradigm changing as MYST was, at that time. That would be something (somewhat more) innovative. Include a Wii type controller so you have a real melee weapon... and create a rich fantasy world. Otherwise, I'm sick of running through alien landscapes or pacific rim jungles... You might need two Wii type controllers. One for movement, and one for melee. Because running around in place on a DDR type footpad is stupid. CPUWIZ
Unfortunately, in order to play this great game, you need a PC that costs several grand and you must run Windows Vista in order to play it. I played it at E3 and it was chugging on a very high-end PC.
sega saturn x
What an asinine first post, crysis looks pretty but the game play also looks ho hum. Oh and bio-shock>>>>>>Crysis, no it isn't using the newest graphic card but speaking from an enviromental point of view it looks far more interestimg. Crysis looks like another generic FPS that just uses the latest graphics card, maybe this wont be the case in fact I hope it isn't. But I can't say I was impressed by the game play one bit from the videos I saw.

misspent_youth
The next gen in gaming will occur when Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation is commercially viable. This system stimulates the vestibular system in humans, allowing us to feel exagerated sensations of force and pressure, or changes in balance. There is a video of a crude mock-up of a racing game using this technology, which allows people to actually feel g-forces when turning a car on screen. I, for one, can't wait to play racing and flying games that use this technology. I don't really consider updates in graphics alone to be next generation, other than in the most literal sense of the word. kisrael
Wow, strapping w/ electrodes to play a game... I dunno. I wonder if there could be some kind of trickery w/ gyroscopes to make something like the Wii-motes push back in realistic ways, like the old force feeback flightsticks, but without being bolted down. We both might be dreaming though, at least for the foreseeable future...
n8littlefield
Crysis looks really pretty, I would never deny that. What worries me is that when you get games looking this good, the price of development skyrockets and the system requirements are just crazy. I would go as far as to say Crysis represents the biggest problem with PC gaming right now which is that no one wants to make a fun game on current hardware, they are too obsessed with the technological aspects of gaming. We need more game designers and less game engines.
+-^CrossBow^-
I would go as far as to say Crysis represents the biggest problem with PC gaming right now which is that no one wants to make a fun game on current hardware, they are too obsessed with the technological aspects of gaming. We need more game designers and less game engines. This is the exact problem...in this statement...N8 has it pegged. And is the real reason why console gaming brought me back in. There is no reason why a game like Pikmin, or Katamari couldn't have been on a PC. In fact if they had...I would've been all over that. No...instead, we have Quake 4, Doom3, FarCry, and all these other FPS. Sure I have them and they look really cool and sound excellent when I play them. But am I having fun doing it? Not really. In most of today's games, I just want to get to the end quickly when playing a PC game. Because I'm always wondering when it will change. Maybe if I get past this level and get back to my dropship....I will have some new scenery or gameplay mechanics come into play... Damn, more corridors and some extra blood on the floors..but this looks like the last level again... Half Life 2. While still basically a FPS at heart, is more than that. Not the best story in my opinion. But lots of varied enviroments and paths for getting from point A to B. That is what we need more of. I just finally played an excellent game that was made a year or so ago for the PC. It doesn't require the greatest PC rig ever to run it. Looks good to me and sounds good as well. The game? ...Darwinia. Basically fresh take on the RTS type of game but simplified with distinct goals and different ways to approach those goals. Sadly I'm finding that I am getting more gameplay satisfaction from console gaming these days, then the same ole same ole that keeps coming out for PCs. Sure Darwinia is excellent...but there isn't enough of those kinds of games, or rather freshness of gaming on PCs as there is for the consoles. Maybe I'm wrong..and I am preceiving this wrong. But it is how I see things today in regards to PC vs Console gaming. And or me I have more fun, and save money playing consoles than I do spending nearly the cost of a PS3 for just a new Video card for my PC. xenomorpher
Looks fun as hell. I'm glad it actually has good AI. In Gears Of War, who ever is under your command tends to get in your way. Too bad theres no Co-Op, thats where Gears Of War really shines as well as so many other places. It does remind me a lot of Far-Cry, but with far better graphics. ManShowBoy
Screw realism. I want accessible, brightly colored, addictive FUN. This looks to have both. After playing Farcry i'll pretty much buy any game made by Crytek, those guys make killer ass games. Hell 3 years later and I still play FC daily. It never gets old. It will be the same with me with Crysis, thats why i'll have no problem dropping a few k just to play the game. ManShowBoy
Next Gen = a prettier version of Far Cry : Instincts Predator? That's what that game looks like to me. Except the console versions of FC had AI that was about as smart as a bag of rocks. I can't wait to relive my favorite part in the movie the Predator where they mow down almost the entire jungle with gun fire, trying to kill the predator. I will now be able to do that in Crysis. I guess I like little details like this in videogames. Edited December 4, 2006 by ManShowBoy
Paranoid
First Person Shooters can be fun. I'm not saying that it isn't a viable form of entertainment. The problem is, it is simply oversatured... so if the great new next gen killer app game hands me a gun and tells me to go walking around forests and hallways shooting enemies, it just doesn't get me that excited. I've been doing that since Wolfenstien 3-D... which, at the time, was a next-gen killer app that sold high end systems. I'm certainly not interested in dropping 3k on a bleeding edge system to play *another* FPS. I'd drop this kind of cash on something that REALLY blew my socks off... but I can't see that being a FPS, and I agree, I that we're at an impasse until certain technologies emerge and mature from a consumer perspective. It doesn't make much difference how gorgeous the game gets if the IO remains a keyboard and a mouse. If I could smell the jungle, feel the humidity, and move about FREELY... that would sell me. I suppose you can't put the cart before the horse, though... and you've got to get the graphics there before you can add the other things. But you know, you can improve the graphics while coming up with something innovative in gameplay. The big thing to me here is that this seems like a case of "meet the new boss, pretty much the same as the old one". Everything about this next gen that I have seen so far, indicates that it is simply a logical progression, an evolution, of what came before it. The differences are by degrees. Doom3 is an incredibly immersive game with a bunch of insane environmental effects unlike anything seen before it. But, standing right next to the previous generation, it isn't anything exactly REVOLUTIONARY. It is evolutionary. And this generation is just more of the same. Making that environment a little more convincing, bit by bit. But things are already quite good. I dunno. I'm rambling.
narutofan
"Eh" is pretty much my response to this. Sure the graphics are great and all, but when it all comes down to it, it's the gameplay that matters.
n8littlefield
I will say from what I've seen the AI does seem much improved. And truthfully, I'd much rather play a game like Crysis in a bright tropical setting than yet another dark demonic game or another WWII shooter. However, I really hope they add something original to make it not just another FPS. I really want a reason next year to upgrade my PC but so far the most fun I've had lately is Bookworm Adventures and I didn't even need to buy more RAM for it.
