Venture II: The Abysmal Abyss - Atari 2600

Price:
$30.00

Venture II is a hack by Tim Snider of the original Venture released on the 2600. Only 24 copies of Venture II were initially produced. Tim created perhaps the most extravagant packaging yet seen for a self-published title--the game was delivered in a hand-crafted, miniature treasure chest, which opened to reveal the cartridge (with numbered label) and a manual, surrounded by elegant, gold leaf paper.

In keeping with the spirit of the original Venture II release, we have created a beautiful new label and full-color 12 page manual.

One of my favorite hacks around, Anywhere.

Classic Venture, with new mazes, a new story, new enemies, treasures, and more difficult rooms to snag treasures from. You can't go wrong here with this one. I play it often, and own more than one copy! You all should own at least one!

Venture always seemed a little empty to me. Sure the game was pretty fun and challenging, but it was low on spectacle. Snider has changed all of that with a visual enhancement that has brought new life to an otherwise middle of the road game.

Venture fans will want to check this hack out for certain, but if you are not terribly enamored with the original, there may not be enough here to save the game for you.

I have always loved Venture and even though Atari's was a pretty good conversion of the Arcade machine, this one from "Sniderman" & Atariage is how Atari should have made games for the 2600.

While i was disappointed that additional levels weren't added (making this mostly a graphical hack with some layout changes) since I love the complex colecovision version of this game, it's thirteen bucks and not 25, so that'd explain that. I definitely prefer it to the original venture, so that's something.

I have to agree that the game definitely looks better now. It really adds to the game play. My only gripe is that the 3rd level was not added, since this seems like a possibility today.

Hey, Venture was a great game to begin with, and this is a real step up from the original.

Most of the sprites have been redrawn and look a lot better, and you can tell what the stuff your collecting is. There's even a little skull and cross bone when you shoot something, rather than the blob of the original game.

But the best part is, the levels have been redesigned. Now, rather than large empty (besides opponents) rooms, there are a lot of in room obstacles to get around. This really steps up the difficulty from the original game, as well as the fun factor.

Over all, the game's great, and I'd recommend it to any fan of the original, or someone just looking for a great game.
