Mental Kombat Label Contest

David Exton's Winning Entry!Update 1/25/2002: The winner of the Mental Kombat Label Contest has now been chosen by the game's creator, Simon Quernhorst! Congratulations go out to Jason Parlee, who won the contest with his third label submission (pictured to the left). Jason will receive a signed, numbered and boxed copy of Mental Kombat, to which his winning entry will be attached. We wish to thank everyone for their participation in this label contest, and as always, we sympathize with those who have to pick a winner when so many great entries are received.

You can discuss the results of the contest in this thread with other AtariAge visitors. In addition, please be sure to check out the Mental Kombat Development Page, which Simon Quernhorst updated on January 24th with new information and screenshots.

Mental Kombat is a new Atari 2600 game being created by Simon Quernhorst. Mental Kombat is a two player puzzle game based on a concept originally developed by Simon and a friend for the Commodore 64. The game is nearly complete and will be available as a limited run of numbered, signed cartridges. AtariAge is sponsoring a contest to provide a label for Mental Kombat. The winning label will be used for the production run of numbered cartridges, as well as cartridges later produced by Hozer Video Games. The winner of the contest will receive the first cartridge, number #01.

The contest winner will have the option to design the box artwork as well. If the winner chooses to create the box, he or she will also receive a box and the manual, along with the first numbered cartridge.

The contest will run until Midnight, December 18th, 2001. All submissions must be received by this time! Simon Quernhorst will choose the winning entry after the contest deadline has passed.

Label Requirements

Both a main label and an end label must be included with your submission. For your label to be considered, the following elements must be included:

  • Simon Quernhorst
  • Copyright © 2002
  • 2 Players
  • Use with 1 or 2 Joysticks
  • Atari Logo - Fuji symbol and ATARI text
  • Artwork - While you are free to create your own theme for the label, Simon has an idea for what he'd like to see: He envisions a 7 by 7 board in a 3D perspective in the middle of the label, with two faces facing each other at the left and right borders of the label.
  • Signature/Serial Number Box - There must be an empty box large enough for Simon to write his signature and the serial number of the cart (#00 - #99). Here are examples of how this was done with Crazy Valet and Okie Dokie.
  • Atari Label Style - The label should look as much like an original Atari label as possible. You may choose which Atari label style you wish to emulate. If you'd like some examples, you can browse through our Atari 2600 Label Guide, and specifically, Atari's Text, Picture, Silver, and Red label styles.
  • Clearly Legible Text - All text on the label must be clearly legible at the size the label will be printed. Please keep this important consideration in mind while you are designing your label.

Labels should be saved in a non-lossy image format such as PNG, TIFF, PCX, or BMP. If you need to save your image using JPEG for some reason, please use a minimal amount of compression. In order for the label to look good when printed, it should be saved at at 200dpi or better. If you are concerned about large file sizes you can drop us a line before mailing the file, but generally anything under 10MB will not be a problem.

Please take care to make sure your label is proportioned correctly. You may download these graphics to assist in this effort:

Please do not send your labels already attached to these graphics, they are provided only to help you properly frame your labels. We will shrink your labels and stick them on these graphics for inclusion on this page where others may view them. The original, high-resolution submissions will be sent to Simon Quernhorst when the contest is complete.

Label submissions and questions about the contest must be sent to [email protected]. We will post submissions publicly on this page as we receive them. The contest may also be discussed in our Contests Forum. For some examples of labels submitted in our last label contest, please visit the Gunfight Label Contest Page.

Remember, the contest ends on at Midnight, December 18th, 2001!
