This ambitious project aims to port the popular Sega arcade game Space Harrier to the Atari XL/XE computers. Chris has detailed all the latest improvements in his development diary, and has even posted a movie clip of the game in action to whet your appetite. Master of Arcturus 2600 HomebrewMaster of Arcturus is a new, real-time space strategy game being developed by Bill Collins for the Atari 2600. In this game you explore distant worlds, use industry to construct assault fleets, and deploy your ships to attack and conquer alien worlds. But watch out! The Alien Overlord is amassing his own assault fleets. You must strike a delicate balance between aggression and defense. Carefully timing your attacks against the enemy will mean the difference between victory and defeat. Oklahoma Gaming Expo Photo GalleryWe attended the 2004 Oklahoma Gaming Expo two weeks ago and have posted a photo gallery with over 100 pictures from the event. This year's show was twice size of the 2003 event, attracting more attendees and vendors. Great fun was had by all, and we brought several new games to the show as well as demos of games in development for the Atari 2600, 5200, and ColecoVision. MESS Version 0.87 ReleasedVersion 0.87 of MESS (the Multi Emulator Super System) is now available for Windows. The changes in this latest release include updates to a wide variety of system drivers (APPLE1, EXIDY, MICROBEE, AMSTRAD, NESPAL, and VTECH), improvements and bug fixes in the Windows user interface, and some source updates as well (this version is based on MAME 0.87). Atari800 Emulator for Amiga OS4The Atari 8-bit emulator Atari800 has now been ported to Amiga OS4. Atari800 emulates the entire line of 8-bit computers as well as the Atari 5200 game console and has been ported to a wide variety of platforms. The Amiga OS4 port is based on the 1.3.3 release of Atari800. You can download the emulator here, and view the Readme here for more information.

Atari 2600 Emulation Hits PS2

Atari 2600 Emulation Hits PS2A new Atari 2600 emulator, PVCS 2600, has been released for the Playstation 2. PVCS is based on Virtual VCS by Dan Boris and Alex Hornby. Ron Fries' sound code and Starpath bankswitching has been added to the emulator as well. This is the first release of PVCS so it's not perfect yet, but the emulator will be improved over time. Atari 8-bit Risk Prototype Discovered

Atari 8-bit Risk Prototype DiscoveredMatt Reichert of AtariProtos.com has discovered a prototype for the Atari 8-bit version of Risk that was in development by Parker Brothers, but never released. The game, based on the popular board game of the same name, was programmed by Steve Kranish (who also programmed Frogger for the 5200) and is about 85% complete. The game even appeared in a Parker Brothers catalog, with versions promised for the Atari 8-bit computers and 5200. Matt is working on getting permission to release the ROM, so with any luck we'll all be able to try it soon through emulation. Atari++ Version 1.40 ReleasedVersion 1.40 of the Atari++ emulator is now available. Atari++ is an Atari 8-bit/5200 emulator that supports several operating systems, including Unix, Linux, Solaris, and Windows. Unix versions are source-only and must be compiled, but the Windows version is available pre-compiled with the SDL libraries. The latest version of Atari++ has several improvements, and a complete list of changes is included with the download package. Paul Slocum Interview on G4TechTVPaul Slocum, author of the popular Atari 2600 Synthcart Synthcart and member of the retro band Tree Wave, made an appearance on G4TechTV Friday evening. Paul was interviewed for the latest episode of ScreenSavers, where he talked about some of his Atari 2600 projects, his band, and showed some designs he drew up for Atari 2600 games while he was in elementary school. Atari Announces Flashback Game ConsoleAtari today announced the Atari Flashback Classic Game Console, a stand-alone, plug-and-play console with 20 built-in classic Atari games (including Saboteur, a game unreleased by Atari back in the day). The Atari Flashback is a hybrid of the Atari 2600 and 7800 consoles, and modeled to resemble the Atari 7800. Included with the console are two Atari 7800-style joysticks, a power supply and a cable to connect the unit to your television. The Atari Flashback goes on sale in November with a suggested retail price of $44.95.
