Erik Mooney has completed his work on INV+, an original take of the arcade classic Space Invaders. This is the only version of Space Invaders for the 2600 to feature 11 invaders per row, matching the arcade game in this regard. INV+ is the successor to INV, with many improvements over the original game, which you can learn about in our Homebrew Discussion Forum. The binary for the game can be downloaded here, and you can buy a copy in cartridge form (complete with a new manual created by David Exton) from the AtariAge Store. The New England Classic Gamers are holding their 11nth meeting this Sunday, June 27th, in Boston, Massachusetts. Tree Wave, a two piece band from Texas that makes pop songs using obsolete computer and video game equipment as instruments, has released their first music CD, Cabana EP+. Paul Slocum, creator of the Atari 2600 Synthcart and Testcart, codes the music primarily on an Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Compaq 286, and Epson dot matrix printer, and Lauren Gray adds lush vocals. The Atari Times has announced the immediate availability of the Newsletter Compendium, a 92 page collection of the original 11 paper issues of The Atari Times that were distributed for free back in 1996 and 1997. Additionally, The Atari Times 2002 Year End Issue is once again available for purchase. Both books feature news, features, reviews, and previews for all Atari home systems that have appeared on The Atari Times website. These include articles for the Jaguar, Lynx, 7800, 5200, 2600, home computers, and even the arcade systems. Each book is in black and white with a wire-o binding and an excellent color cover. Organizers of the Classic Computer and Gaming Show have announced a date and location for their 2004 show. This year's event will take place on October 23rd at the St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Mentor Ohio. Version 0.83 of MESS (the Multi Emulator Super System) is now available for Windows and Unix. The latest version of MESS fixes Atari 8-bit computer cartridge loading and partial state save support, thanks to Nate Woods. Fresh back from a weekend spent playing arcade games until the wee hours of the morning, we've posted a photo gallery of the 2004 Houston Area Arcade Group Expo. The 2004 MiniGame Competition has been announced! This competition involves writing tiny 1K and 4K games for old 8-bit game systems and computers, pitting game authors against one another to see who can write the most enjoyable games in such a tight squeeze. The Atari 2600, 5200, and 8-bit computers are all eligible for the contest, and entries must be received by August 29, 2004. Shortly after the deadline, voting will begin where you can download and vote on all the submitted games! You can look at last year's competition for inspiration and a preview of the types of games you can expect to see this year. We've made another large Atari 2600 Hacks update, this time adding over 30 new hacks since the last update. Version 1.35 of the Atari++ emulator is now available. Atari++ is an Atari 8-bit/5200 emulator that supports several operating systems, including Unix, Linux, Solaris, and Windows. Unix versions are source-only and must be compiled, but the Windows version is available pre-compiled with the SDL libraries. This latest version of Atari++ contains several improvements and bug fixes over previous releases (you can view a complete list of changes here. The NorthWest Classic Gaming Enthusiasts (NWCGE) are sponsoring a high-score contest for X3V0LuX! The first 20 Freedom Fighters to successfully fend off the evil Odnetnin and Ages empire attacks must send in valid proof of a perseverance rating over 45,000 for which they will be awarded with a unique Freedom Fighter patch (pictured to the right) and a personal letter from the X3V0LuX commander. X3V0LuX (pronounced zee-vo-lux) is a clever graphics hack of M Network's Astroblast and the contest is open to anyone who purchases the game in cartridge form.
