The editor of The Atari Times has announced the immediately availability of the 2001 Year End Issue and 2004 Copmendium at CafePress.com. Both books include 100 or more pages full of news, features, reviews, and previews for all Atari home systems that have appeared on the website. Zach Matley has posted the binary to Combat Redux, a unique hack of Atari's Combat that includes 28 user-created playfields chosen in the Combat Redux Playfield Design Contest held earlier this year on AtariAge. The excellent Atari Lynx emulator Handy is now Open Source. This means that the source code is now available to anyone who wants to view it, customize it, improve it, or port the emulator to other platforms. The source code is available from CVS on Sourceforge, or as a zip file from the downloads page. The full text of the book The Master Memory Map for the Atari is now available at AtariArchives.org. Published in 1984 by Educational Software, the book is a thorough introduction to the Atari 8-bit's memory architecture. Beginning programmers can use it to learn the basics of PEEKs and POKEs. AtariAge and Opcode Games are proud to announce a Sky Jaguar High Score Contest! Sky Jaguar is an original ColecoVision port of an obscure arcade game of the same name. Sky Jaguar also appeared on MSX computers, which this version is based on. The winner of the high score contest will receive a rare copy of the game "Magical Tree", which is a port that was completed for the ColecoVision by Opcode Games, but will not be sold! Published in 1985, the book includes the complete, commented assembly language source code for the popular Atari word processor, as well as instructions for using the program. A test release of the newest version of the Atari 2600 emulator Stella has been announced and is now available for downloading. Versions for Linux and Windows are available, and the source is included as well. The biggest change from Stella 1.3 is the codebase is now based on the Simple Directmedia Layer (SDL). The Windows version is currently command-line based, but a GUI version will eventually be made available. New features include an OpenGL backend and event remapping that allows keyboard/joystick remapping of nearly every Stella function. Linux users will be glad to learn that an initial version of the 2600 emulator z26 has been released for Linux. This version is not quite perfect, but it does play games with sound, and supports keyboard, mouse, and joystick controls. The z26 Linux authors are looking for people to test this release, specifically to test the code on various Linux distribution and to test out various ROMs to make sure they behave the same as the 2.12 release of z26 for Windows. The April 2004 issue of MyAtari Magazine is now online, and with this issue it's time to vote for the 2004 MyAtari Reader Awards! A large number of categories await voters this year, and AtariAge has been nominated in two of them, Best Atari Supporting Company and Best Atari Web Site of the year. In addition, Bryan Edewaard's Castle Crisis has been nominated for Best Game Release of the year. Dan Boris has announced that a new version of his Atari 5200 Virtual Super System (VSS) emulator is now available. This version has several new features, including support for Bounty Bob Strikes Back, support for two emulated controllers, and the games River Raid and Blaster now run properly. Several new features for developers have also been added to this release. Andrew Davie has begun work on his next Atari 2600 project, and has put together a simple Java version of the concept in order to solicit feedback. Tentatively titled Great Balls of Slime, the concept is simple enough: Shoot at the green slime oozing down from the top of the screen to prevent it from reaching the bottom. When it does, it starts to pile up, slowly raising you up the screen. If you reach the top, the game is over! Version 0.81 of MESS (the Multi Emulator Super System) is now available for Windows and DOS. This latest version of MESS includes a large number of new system drivers (mainly for MSX and MSX2 systems), bug fixes for several systems, and some Windows GUI fixes. Cye Freeman has embarked to develop a 1K Atari 2600 version of a board game called "Deluxe Master Mind" released in 1972 by Invicta. The Atari 2600 version is being developed as a 1K entry for the 2004 Minigame Competition (a typical Atari 2600 game is 4K or larger). The 2600 version, dubbed Master Mind Deluxe, uses 5 holes and 8 colors, allowing for 32768 possible codes. A second variation uses blank positions, the equivalent of 9 colors, giving 59049 permutations. The original marketing catch-phrase for the game was, "Break the hidden code". Starcat Developments has announced the immediate availability of a new Jaguar release called Ocean Depths. Ocean Depths consists of three separate parts: The first is Ocean Depths, a relaxing slideshow similar to "Ambient Monsters" on the NUON. The second part is a playable demo of Starcat's upcoming Jaguar adventure game Eerievale. And finally, a game called JagMIND is included, based on the original board game Mastermind.
