This Fox prototype for the 2600 is based on the movie of the same game, and your goal is to help save your friends who are slowly being transformed into alligators!  The geeks, nerds, and spazzes at atariarchives.org are proud to announce that the full text of Compute!'s First Book of Atari is now available on the Web. Published in 1981, this classic book includes articles printed just after the release of the Atari 400 and 800 computers. It includes early reviews of Atari BASIC, DOS 1, and the Atari 810 disk drive, plus unique BASIC and machine language tutorials. The first chapter includes an interview with Atari's VP of marketing, examining the early '80s personal computer market. This is the 13th book to be made available at atariarchives.org and you can view it here.

 Many people had an opportunity to try their hand at the Atari 5200 Adventure II demo we had running in the AtariAge booth at last weekend's PhillyClassic. Author Ron Lloyd has updated his Adventure II Development Page with a more advanced demo that you can download and try in your favorite Atari 5200 emulator. The demo represents early development of the game, but gives you a good feel for how the game will look when completed! You can download the demo and keep abreast of Adventure II developments here.

In the near future we'll have boxed versions of the UA Limited prototypes Pleiades, Funky Fish, and Cat Trax, as well as new and exciting 2600 homebrew games!  Yes, we all know it's April Fools Day. That's why we are all skeptical when Bushi2600 announced in our forum that he had discovered a long-sought prototype of Coleco's Turbo for the Atari 2600. Thanks to the help of some other members, he has now dumped and posted the ROM! You can read all about it in this forum thread, download the ROM, and let everyone know what you think.

 So, you've been wondering what's delaying Duke Nukem Forever? The surprise culprit turns out to be none other than Duke Nukem Forever for the Atari 2600. The fine folks at 3D Realms have posted some pics of the packaging, a screenshot, and even a movie. They somehow managed to simplify the interface to work with only one joystick and button, so no special controller is needed. There's even network play with a friend using DukeLink!

 A new version of Polo for the Atari 2600 will be available at PhillyClassic 4. This unreleased prototype features the red packaging from the late 80's, including a professionally printed box, manual, and label. The game has even been expanded with a 2K intro by Chris Tumber. Polo is scheduled to go on sale at 7 p.m. Friday night at Cassidy Nolen's booth right next to the PhillyClassic entrance. Only 50 copies are available, so act quick if you don't want to miss it!

 Better late than never! The insanely late Sep/Oct 2002 issue of 2600 Connection is finally shipping.  The Midwest Classic, scheduled for June 7th 2003, is hoping to have the largest collection of new computer, pinball and video game developers on hand for this year's event. To meet this lofty goal, the organizers are offering free dealer tables to anyone who wants to bring along their new creations! For the cost of one adult ticket, anyone with a new creation can secure a dealer table if they meet a short list of criteria for demonstrating their item(s) at the event.

 CyberRoach has posted a wrapup with pictures of the Obsolete Media Festival held this past weekend. Among other things, the festival included musical performances by Paul Slocum, an NWCGE meeting with loads of games for sale and trade, and the 6th Annual Seattle Atari 2600 Championship.

 Version 2.06 of z26 Atari 2600 emulator for Windows has been released. Several new features have been added to this version, such as improved support for playing games in a window, a new phosphorescent effect to help improve games with flicker, and additional full-screen video modes.  The team at AtariArchives.org is pleased to announce that the full text of the best-selling book Machine Language For Beginners by Richard Mansfield is now online. Published in 1983 by Compute! Books, this classic book shows BASIC programmers how to program in 6502 machine language. It includes examples and program code for Atari, Apple 2, PET/CBM, VIC-20, and Commodore 64 computers. This is the 12th classic computing book available at AtariArchives.org. Like all books at the site, it has been made available by permission of the copyright holder.

 Atari2600.com has announced its release of Atari 2600 Stunt Cycle at PhillyClassic 4. Stunt Cycle was completed on July 21, 1980 by Bob Polaro, a former Atari game programmer with several titles under his belt. Bob's support of the current project includes his attendance at PhillyClassic 4 where he will be available to discuss development of the game and sign autographs. Stunt Cycle is a two player console port stemming from Atari's highly successful 1976 arcade machine of the same name. This paddle controlled game is complete with sound and scoring.

 Version 1.3.0 of the Atari800MacX Atari 8-bit emulator has been released. Atari800MacX is a native Mac OS X Cocoa port of the Atari 800 emulator. There are many new features and bug fixes in this latest version, so you'll want to upgrade if you have an earlier release.  Version 0.30 of the Atari ST emulator Hatari has been released. Hatari is an Atari ST emulator that runs under Linux, FreeBSD, BeOS, and OS X. In this latest version, the problems with the MFP interrupts have been fixed, the CPU core has been resynced with UAE 0.8.22, and the audio output has been improved. You can download the latest source as well as a binary for Mac OS X at the Hatari Development Page.

 Another age-old Atari prototype has finally surfaced, this time Mind Maze for the Atari 2600. The existence of this prototype has been suspected for years (often listed as a game for the Mindlink controller), and now Matt Reichert has managed to secure a copy to confirm its existence. Mind Maze appears to be some type of memory match game, but is not a terribly interesting game and does not appear to be complete. Still, it's an interesting piece of Atari history and we'll be demonstrating Mind Maze at the AtariAge booth in two weeks at PhillyClassic 4.  It's always interesting to see what various Atari alumni are up to, and we've gotten word that Atari 2600 programmer Steve Woita (Asterix, Quadrun, Taz, Garfield) is still busy writing games. His latest effort is a game for Windows called Clickum. In this arcade puzzler you must click groups of pool balls before they reach the end.
