Tom Sloper Interview

Read the interview with Tom SloperMatt Reichert of AtariProtos.com had the opportunity recently to interview game industry veteran Tom Sloper. Tom Sloper has been designing and producing video games since the late 70s, creating games for a large number of consoles over the years, from the Vectrex and Atari 2600 to modern systems such as the PlayStation and GameCube. Companies Tom Sloper has worked for include Smith Engineering, Activision, Atari, and Sega. NTSC Acid Drop

Visit our Software Conversions PageLike clockwork, Thomas Jentzsch has come through with another TV Format Conversion for the Atari 2600. The victim this time is Salu's Acid Drop, which was only released in PAL format but can now be enjoyed in NTSC. Acid Drop is similar to the Sega Genesis game Columns, which itself is a twist on the classic Tetris. You can download this conversion and more from our TV Format Conversions page. Enjoy!

Inside Atari DOS

The book was written by Bill Wilkinson, founder of Optimized Systems Software, a company that created many great programming tools for the Atari 8-bit computers. Due to copyright restrictions, the site includes the full text of the book, but does not include the actual source DOS 2.0S code as in the physical book. You can find this book and many more at AtariArchives.org.

Virtual Jaguar Emulator

We don't know much about this emulator yet, but several new screenshots have been posted in recent days. Between this emulator and Project Tempest, we'll hopefully have top notch Jaguar emulation soon!

Fatal Run PAL to NTSC Conversion

Jump to our TV Format Conversions PageAtari 2600 programmer Thomas Jentzsch has performed a TV Format Conversion of the game Fatal Run, which was only released in Europe as a PAL title. Owners of the Cuttle Cart will especially appreciate this PAL to NTSC conversion, as it will allow you to play Fatal Run on televisions in North America. In addition to Fatal Run, we've also added three NTSC to PAL conversions by Fabrizio Zavagli ("Rasty"): Cakewalk, Crash Dive, and Kool Aid Man. Break: New Lynx Homebrew

More information about BreakEric Ruck has announced that he is developing a new Breakout clone for the Atari Lynx titled Break. Eric's version goes far beyond Breakout and features several different gameplay modes, as well as many options to keep Breakout fans coming back time and time again. The site, Klax World, is a treasure trove of knowledge for fans of the popular arcade game that has found its way to many home platforms (including the Atari 2600, 7800, and Lynx). Bradley Trainer Support in MAME

Read more about the Bradley TrainerThe Bradley Trainer was a modification to Atari's Battlezone arcade game created for the US Army to help train personel in the use of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Supposedly only two of these machines were built, and of the two only one of them is known to exist today. The latest version of the arcade enumator MAME (0.62) has support for the Bradley Trainer, which hasn't been emulated until now. Pictures and more information of the Atari Bradley Trainer be found on this site, and screenshots of it running in MAME can be found here.

Atari800Win Version 3.1 Released

Version 3.1 of the Atari 8-bit computer emulator Atari800Win Plus has been released. This version is based on the Atari800 kernel 1.2.4 (with the latest changes) and has many new features, including:

    Ten New 2600 Hacks

    Visit Back In TimeYou've probably heard about the Atari 10-in-1 TV Games product that we mentioned a while back. This self-contained unit, in the form factor of an Atari 2600 joystick, contains ten classic Atari 2600 games, runs off batteries, and plugs directly into the composite inputs of a television. This unit is now beginning to show up at stores and online retailers, and Mike Stulir of Back In Time has posted a review of the unit so you can read about it before running off to buy one. Mike explores the 10-in-1 in great detail and how it might be received by hard core classic gamers, as well as those who haven't touched a 2600 in twenty years.     Hi-Res MagazineThe Classic Computer Magazine Archive has added Hi-Res Magazine to its archives. Hi-Res was a short-lived magazine, published from 1983 to 1984, dedicated to the Atari 8-Bit and Commodore 64 computers. The archive includes the full text of (all?) four issues. (The publisher recalls that six issues were published, but no one we consulted has seen issues beyond number four. If anyone can verify the existence of issues 5 and 6, please let them know.) Highlights include: An Unauthorized History of Atari, Inc., an interview with David Crane, a preview of the Commodore 264 computer, and 34 Atari and C64 software reviews.
