Assembloids 2600

Assembloids 2600 is a fast-paced reaction puzzle game in just 4K for the Atari 2600. Author Martin Wendt restricted himself to 4K for this project, since he considers this limit to be working within the original spirit of the machine. It is quite challenging to create a polished, enjoyable game within 4K of space!

Upon starting a game, your screen shows five windows. There is one central window and one each in the four neighboring sides. A quarter of a face in a particular color is displayed in the central window and you can place it by moving the joystick up, right, down, or left if the corresponding tile is still empty - if the tile is not empty, you'll lose one of your precious lives. While you are making the decision where to move the face piece, the timer bar decreases faster and faster.

Assembloids

Once a full face is complete, the windows are cleared again and you are awarded points. The number of points depends on the matching of colors for your completed face. A full face of the same color gains you 300 points. Having three face parts of the same color results in 100 points. If only two parts are of equal color, you'll receive 40 points, and a fully mixed face is only worth a mere 10 points. In case you are able to clear ALL the windows, a whopping extra 500 points and an extra life are added as well!

Assembloids 2600 is based on Assembloids 2013 which Martin coded for the Commodore 64. Assembloids 2013 itself is a port of the Flash game "Quartet" by Photon Storm.

AtariVox Support

If you have an AtariVox or SaveKey plugged into joystick port 2, separate high scores for every difficulty will be saved. Otherwise only one score is shown. Holding right on the joystick and pressing SELECT will exit to the title screen, increase the difficulty, and reset the high score of that difficulty to 0 (only if an AtariVox or SaveKey is plugged in).

Assembloids BoxIf you'd like a boxed copy of Assembloids, please select "Box Upgrade: Yes" at the top of the page before adding Assembloids to your cart. Our boxes are professionally printed and include a box insert to hold your Assembloids cartridge in place. We want you to play our games, so we have not sealed or shrinkwrapped the boxes in any way, allowing you easy access to the game cartridge and manual.

These boxes are the same size as boxes Atari produced for their games "back in the day". They look great sitting on a shelf with your other boxed homebrew games, or alongside games from the classic Atari 2600 library. We only have a limited number of boxes for each game, and there is no guarantee they will become available again once our supplies are exhausted. I think this is a bit of a hidden gem amongst the new homebrews for the Atari 2600. It is a simple but addictive puzzle game that draws people of all ages to it. It is a good party game and if you leave it on, people are curious and a crowd will soon gather. It is really well made and I haven%u2019t really played anything like it, which makes it really stand out for me. The game is based on twitch reflex gameplay where you have to be quick and you definitely improve each time you play. The object of the game is to match body parts of different characters and colours in 4 directions from the centre against a timer. The characters need to all be the same colour for the big points. My family all really enjoy playing this game and thoroughly recommend it.

I love these types of games, simple but addictive! We played it live on our Twitch stream here for those that want to watch us play it for the first time: https://youtu.be/sGI5wQEsqZk?t=8514

Definately a fun game and well programed and designed. Makes the same fun than the versions of this game for other platforms. Great!!!

Being a 2600 games developer myself, I usually refrain from reviewing other people's work. But for this little gem, I made an exception.

Assembloids is a game that may look simple at first glance, but it will soon grow on you. Initially you will probably play it as a rather simple challenge for your reflexes. But soon you will discover that there is more. To reach really high scores you have to develop some strategy and become able to execute this as long as your brain can follow the ever increasing speed. And that strategy makes a BIG difference!

The programming is very well executed. The different creatures are distinctive and well designed. You get great gameplay with precise controls and a cool, animated title screen plus SaveKey support for saving your high scores. All that within just 4K!

And the packaging is excellent too. I like the unique box and label design, which really sticks out. The manual is very well done too. In addition it also gives you an impression how much labor and love went into development. And this dedication definitely shows!

Played this couple years ago at the CGF and was totally addicted. All those new DK games were just poor hacks compared to this little gem. While it is basically like Strawberry Shortcake it is 10 times the fun factor.

I played this while it was in development at a couple of classic gaming events, and it's on my short list to order. The game was very addictive, taking a simple concept and executing very well.

I had a great time playing this at Gamescom in 2016. The game is a perfect example of twitch gameplay done right. Amazing to think that this is all done in 4k.

Highly recommended! I already played Assembloids 2600 at the gamescom last year and I was fascinated. So I included it into my article about new old indie retro games!
