You've probably heard about the long-rumored port of the arcade game Zoo Keeper for the Atari 2600, the existence of which has yet to be discovered. Fortunately, Robert Vieira, who programmed the sound for the Atari 2600 version of Zoo Keeper while working at Atari, has preserved the source code to his Zoo Keeper audio. He shared this binder with Ken Van Mersbergen, who typed the sources in by hand (OCR could not be used) and then worked with Thomas Jentzsch to create an Atari 2600 binary that lets you listen to all the sounds of Zoo Keeper. The sounds are top notch, and while it's all we have of the game at this point in time, it's great to at least be able to experience the audio from this never-released game. You can download the binary here and run it in your favorite Atari 2600 emulator. To play the sounds, press the fire button. After a sound has finished playing, press the fire button again to hear the next sound. For a complete list of sounds, please visit our Atari 2600 Forum. Thanks again to Robert Vieira, Ken Van Mersbergen, and Thomas Jentzsch for making this possible and preserving this piece of Atari 2600 history! Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...

Greg Stanton has announced the availability of a new Atari 7800 emulator called the ProSystem Emulator. The ProSystem Emulator runs under Windows, and Greg wrote the emulator from scratch, including emulation of the Atari 7800's 6502 (Sally), Maria, and Riot chips. Even in its first incarnation the 7800 emulation is first rate and this looks to be a very promising emulator to keep tabs on if you're a 7800 fan. You can download the ProSystem Emulator here, and discuss it with Greg and other AtariAge guests in our Atari 7800 Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...

We're proud to announce the immediate availability of all five Ebivision Atari 2600 games in the AtariAge Store. Most of these original Atari 2600 homebrew games, written by Eric Bacher and Igor Barzilai, have not been available to buy for over two years. We worked closely with Ebivision to make these titles available again through the AtariAge Store. We've created new labels and manuals for each game, giving the set of five games a uniform appearance. You can learn more about each game by following these links:If you don't own any of the Ebivision titles, we've also made all five of them available in a discounted package. If you're a fan of Lucasfilm Games' early and innovative games for the Atari 5200 and 8-bit computers, then we've got some treats for you! We were recently contacted by Peter Langston and David Fox, two principles in starting up Lucasfilm Games 20 years ago. Peter Langston was "Director of Games Development" and was responsible for hiring everyone who worked for the studio, and David Fox was the Game Designer / Project Leader for Rescue on Fractalus (and he even appears on the box cover). The two have created informative websites with a wealth of great information regarding Ballblazer and Rescue on Fractalus, Lucasfilm Games first two releases. Gems among this information are videos from a press conference in 1984 at Lucasfilm where Rescue on Fractalus and Ballblazer were first announced. Here are links to the relevant pages:

Fishies is an original Atari 2600 game by Bob Montgomery, loosely based on the Intellivision game Shark! Shark!. In Fishies (working title) you are a wee fish and, to survive, you must eat other, smaller fish to grow. But watch out for the shark, as he's also on the hunt for food and you could be his next meal! Fishies will feature extensive, continuously-playing music (with an option to turn it off for those who'd rather do their fishing in quiet), as well as a two-player battle mode. You can view screenshots of Fishies here, and download the latest version of the game as well as follow its development in our Homebrew Discussion Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...

For those who may have missed it, the February 2nd edition of The Onion A.V. Club has an interview with Atari 2600 programmer Howard Scott Warshaw. While working as a game designer and programmer at Atari, Howard Scott Warshaw created Yars' Revenge, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., and the unreleased prototype Saboteur. In the interview, Warshaw talks about the games he designed while at Atari, the E.T. landfill story, what it was like to work at Atari, and more. While you're there, you'll also want to read Wil Wheaton's review of Gunslinger (also known as Outlaw). For those who don't recall, Wil Wheaton played the role of Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Enjoy! Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
We are pleased to announce that Nathan Strum is the winner of the Ultra SCSIcide Label Contest! Nathan's vision of an exploding hard drive captures the frenetic pace of Ultra SCSIcide and what we imagine happens to your data after you finally succumb to the ever increasing speed of the game! It was a tough decision for Joe Grand to make, as many fantastic entries were submitted for this contest. For his efforts, Nathan will receive a copy of Ultra SCSIcide, labeled with his winning label design, a Stelladaptor 2600 to USB Interface and a $25 gift certificate in the AtariAge Store. Once again, congratulations to Nathan Strum (who has won several recent label contests) and to everyone who took the time to submit the many great labels we received for this contest! It's always a pleasure to witness the artistic talent present in the classic gaming community and we look forward to more such contests in the future! Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
Ever imagine what it would be like to turn an Atari 2600 game console into a Macintosh computer running OS X? Tim Robertson and Chad Perry certainly did, and filmed their first MacMod video show (inspired by shows along the lines of American Chopper and Junkyard Wars) detailing the entire build process. The end result is an Atari 2600 console that looks relatively stock, but hidden beneath its surface is a Macintosh computer. You can watch all four video segments here, and be sure to look for the mirror of the video at the bottom of the page. To discuss this video show (running time is about an hour!) with other AtariAge guests please drop by our Atari 2600 Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
Activision and Burger King have teamed up to release a series of small LCD handheld games based on early Atari 2600 games by Activision. Four different games are available, each in two separate colors: Grand Prix, Kaboom!, Tennis, and Barnstorming. The games come free with a Burger King Kid's Meal, but several people have been able to purchase them without a meal for 99 cents. One interesting note is that the Mad Bomber in Kaboom! drops hamburgers instead of bombs. You can learn more by visiting Burger King, and also discuss this promotion in our Atari 2600 Forum.
