 The Encyclopedia of Game.Machines is a new book that provides information on over 400 video game consoles and personal computers, starting in 1972 all the way through the present, and we're excited about making it available in our store! Each system receives between one to six pages of coverage (the Amiga gets six, the 2600 four, the 7800 two), depending on the popularity of the system (perhaps with a bias towards systems that were more popular in Europe, where the book originated). We were impressed with the quality of the book's presentation and the 600 accompanying pictures--easily the best photos of classic hardware we've seen in a book of this nature. If you're into classic video game systems and computers, you need this book!

 Atari 2600 guru Manuel Rotschkar (whose previous games include Seawolf, Star Fire, and Gunfight) has released a public beta test of his upcoming 2600 game Crazy Balloon. Crazy Balloon is a port of the 1980's arcade underdog from Taito, which is the grandfather of games like Kuru Kuru Kururin. In Crazy Balloon you must carefully navigate your balloon through many varied levels full of different dangers. Manuel has done a superb job of porting this obscure and unique arcade game to the 2600, making Crazy Balloon a great addition to the 2600 library.  If you're a programmer who loves squeezing games into a tiny memory footprint, you'll be glad to learn that the 2005 MiniGame Competition has been announced! This competition involves writing tiny games (in categories ranging from 1K to 8K) for old 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit game systems and computers, pitting game authors against one another to see who can write the most enjoyable games in such a tight space. Entries must be received by September 30th, 2005, and shortly after the deadline voting will begin where you can download and vote on all the submitted games! For inspiration, you can look at last year's competition to view all the entries as well as the winners (which included Thomas Jentzsch for his Atari 2600 Cave 1K entry).  Fresh from the Oklahoma Video Game Expo, author Ron Lloyd has released a public version of the Atari 5200 Adventure II demo those attending the show were able to enjoy first hand. This new demo of Adventure II has several improvements over the last demo Ron released, including:- Improved behavior with Troll & Minotaur.
- Better collision, more rounded gameplay and less graphical glitches (the last demo was right after a graphics-register overhaul, and collision was adversely affected).
- The player earns a burst of speed when he kills a dragon and at other times, allowing you to traverse the large mazes more quickly for a short while. Other power-ups will be in the game eventually.
- Two sample mazes - game 1 is a short one, and game 2 is huge game world that isn't entirely finished, so don't complain if you get lost!

 AtariAge will be present at the upcoming Oklahoma Video Game Expo, taking place June 18th at the Marriott Tulsa Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We'll have some new homebrew games to sell for the Atari 2600 and ColecoVision, demos of games in development for the Atari 2600 and 5200, copies of the new book The Encyclopedia of Game.Machines (not yet available in the US), and more! Several homebrew authors, including Andrew Davie (all the way from Australia!), Billy Eno, and Scott Huggins will be at the AtariAge booth, demonstrating their latest games and giving you an opportunity to meet and talk with them. There will also be tournaments for the new homebrew releases Go Fish! and Warring Worms: The Worm (Re)Turns!  ColecoVision fans will be glad to learn that Scott Huggins has created a flawless ColecoVision port of the fast-paced arcade game Astro Invader. Scott has brought the thrill of the arcade game home to your ColecoVision, faithfully reproducing the sights, sounds, and gameplay of the original. How many waves of alien invaders can you fend off before being overwhelmed? Astro Invader is making its debut at the Oklahoma Video Game Expo on June 18th, featuring original box, label and manual artwork by Joe Kollar. If you're not able to attend the show, you can pre-order Astro Invader and it'll ship to you the week of June 20th.

 After careful consideration of all the wonderful submissions for the Go Fish! Label Contest, author Bob Mongtomery has chosen Renato Brito's fifth entry as the winning label. Renato's label will adorn copies of Go Fish! when it goes on sale at the Oklahoma Video Game Expo on June 18th, after which it will be available for purchase in the AtariAge Store. Go Fish! is an original game loosely based on the Intellivision game Shark! Shark! - you are a wee fish and, to survive, you must eat other, smaller fish to grow. But watch out for the shark, as he's also on the hunt for food and you could be his next meal! Renato will receive a $50 gift certificate in the AtariAge Store, as well as a copy of Go Fish! featuring his winning design. Congratulations to Renato Brito and to all the participants who took the time to enter the contest and show off their talents!

 Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, also responsible for starting the Chuck E. Cheese restaurant chain, has announced plans to form a new chain of restaurants, the uWink Media Bistro. These new restaurants will feature screens at every table and bar stool, where patrons can enjoy video games, media content, and interactive menus. Unlike Chuck E. Cheese, which is geared towards families and children, the uWink Media Bistro is being aimed at adults. In 2000, Nolan Bushnell founded uWink, which produces touch screen gaming terminals installed in bars and restaurants worldwide. The first uWink Media Bistro is scheduled to open later this fall in Los Angeles.  Steven Tucker (classics in our forums) has announced that in cooperation with Mr. Atari, the "MyIDE+Flash" IDE Interface Cartridge is now available. The "MyIDE+Flash" Cartridge is a professionally produced IDE interface cartridge for all 64k Atari 8-bit computers. The new MyIDE+Flash interface combines Sijmen "Mr. Atari" Schouten's popular "MyIDE" interface with an Atarimax 1Mbit reprogrammable flash cartridge. The cartridges built in 1Mbit flash system allows you to utilize the interface and your hard disk setup in any 64k XL/XE computer, using the built-in boot OS, without modifications to the existing hardware or operating system.  The full text of the classic book Computer Graphics Primer is now online at AtariArchives.org. Published in 1979, the book highlights the state of the art of computer graphics at that time. From the back cover: "It is geared to the user who wants to know the concepts and techniques for drawing pictures, making graphs and charts, animating shapes and objects, creating mandalas and dazzlers, and just about any application of the visual arts that you can imagine." Of particular interest are profiles, with pictures, of low-cost and high-cost ($5000 to $70,000) graphics computers of the era. This is the 33rd book to be made available at AtariArchives.org.

 When we upgraded to new forum software recently, many of you probably noticed several new features over the old forum. One such feature we've added is the ability for members to create and maintain their own Blogs. If you enjoy writing and you want to share your words with other members of the AtariAge community, you now have a place to do so. While we expect many blogs here on AtariAge to be about video games, you are free to write on any subject that interests you. Blogs can also be linked to individual Galleries (also a new feature in our forums), and members can post comments to your blog and even track them via RSS.  Matthias Luedtke (Schmutzpuppe in our forums) has announced that he is developing a version of the popular arcade game Frogger for the Atari 7800. Your goal in Frogger is to navigate your frog from the bottom of the screen to the top, which entails crossing a dangerous road and then hopping on logs and turtles across a river. The initial version of the game Matthias has posted doesn't include all the elements from the arcade game yet (only a single level, no scoring, timer or sound), but it is still playable and shows great promise.  Version 2.9 of the Atari SAP Music Archive (ASMA) has been released. The Atari SAP music archive contains hundreds of the best tunes from Atari 8-bit computers in a format that can be reproduced perfectly by various SAP players. The latest archive contains 69 new songs, fixed credits, better rips, and some duplicates have been removed. The ASMA collection now contains a whopping 1900 tunes. You can get the latest collection of music as well as players for a variety of platforms at the Atari SAP Music Archive.

 While there's been some talk about the Flashback 2.0 in our forums, Atari has now formally announced the successor to their popular Flashback dedicated game console. The new Flashback 2.0 is styled after an original Atari 2600 console, features 40 built-in games, is packaged with two Atari 2600 CX-40 style joysticks, and will carry a retail price of less than $30. While most of the games included are classic hits from the original Atari 2600, some original games as well as homebrews also make an appearance. The new Flashback unit is based on genuine 2600 hardware, meaning the games running on it are actual 2600 binaries as opposed to simulations of existing 2600 games, as was the case with the original Flashback.
