If you're in Texas this weekend and can find your way to Irving (just west of Dallas), you'll want to check out the 2005 Texas Pinball Festival. This annual event features over 100 pinball machines and classic video games all set on free play for the entire weekend. Given how uncommon it is to find working pinball machines in the wild these days, events like the Texas Pinball Festival are one of the few venues to enjoy pinball machines and classic arcade games in good, working order. The event also features tournaments, an outdoor flea market/swap meet on Friday, and a Monster Bash Party on Saturday to coincide with Halloween. You can learn more about the event by visiting the Texas Pinball Festival web site. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...

Adventure II author Ron Lloyd has chosen the winning entries in the Ye Olde Adventure II Contest. The contest was comprised of two parts: The first part of the contest was to create alternate player icon graphics. The second part of the contest was to dream up player rankings that will be displayed to the player upon completion of the game (in a manner similar to Star Raiders). The Grand Prize Winner, chosen for his wonderful animated Knight icon, is Juston Hairgrove. The 1st Runner-Up Prize Winner, chosen randomly from the remaining icon finalists is Jeff Koone. The 2nd Runner-Up Prize Winner, chosen randomly from all the rankings finalists, is Christian Bogey. You can view the contest rules here, view the winning entries here, view all the submitted icons here and all the submitted rankings here. Songbird Productions has announced the immediate availability of the unreleased Jaguar game Total Carnage. Total Carnage, based on the Midway arcade game, is the sequel to the popular Williams arcade game Smash TV. As with Smash TV, Total Carnage throws a seemingly overwhelming number of enemies at the player (or players in a two player game), and you'll need all the power-ups you can find to get out alive! The Jaguar version of Total Carnage that Songbird Productions is selling is a fairly complete version of the game, newer than any previously shown to Jaguar fans. You can order Total Carnage from Songbird Productions and discuss this unexpected surprise with other Jaguar fans in our Atari Jaguar Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
The September 2005 issue of Hardcore Gamer Magazine, a relatively new publication, contains a six page spread featuring the new Atari Flashback 2 game console, an interview with Curt Vendel (Flashback 2 Lead Engineer), an interview with Aaron Curtis (author of the 2600 homebrew game Fall Down), and a feature about homebrew games. They've even detailed how you can add a cartridge port to your Flashback 2 so you use regular Atari 2600 cartridges with the console. You can find Hardcore Gamer in print form at local newsstands, and you can also download the September 2005 issue in PDF form directly from Hardcore Gamer. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
Manuel Rotschkar, author of several popular Atari 2600 homebrew games (most recently Crazy Balloon), has begun work on a new 2600 project: Colony 7. Based on the 1981 Taito arcade game of the same name, your goal in Colony 7 is to defend the city from alien attack by controlling two ion-cannons at your disposal. The premise is similar to Imagic's Atlantis, but with more sophistication in that your city has a shield that attackers need to blast through first, and you also have a smartbomb at your disposal that destroys all enemies on the screen. You can learn more and keep abreast of Colony 7's development in our Homebrew Discussion Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...

Thanks to the efforts of Atari Archivist Ken Van Mersbergen (who recently uncovered Sinistar for the Atari 8-bit computers), another previously unknown Atari 2600 prototype has now surfaced. Ken's latest find is the game Boggle, which was programmed by David Crane while he was at Atari. In Boggle, which is based on the popular word game of the same name, you must form as many words as possible from a random 4x4 grid of letters. The 2600 version of the game is for two players only, and each player can form a maximum of eight words (likely due to memory constraints of the 2600). You can download Boggle here, read a more thorough review of the game over at AtariProtos.com, and discuss this find in our Prototypes Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
If you haven't already submitted entries for the Ye Old Adventure II Contest, you only have a few more days to do so, as the contest ends August 31st! Adventure II is a new Atari 5200 game that picks up where the classic Atari 2600 game Adventure leaves off. Adventure II features larger mazes, snazzier graphics, and more to do than in the original game, promising to be one of the best Atari 5200 homebrew releases to date! As the game nears completion, AtariAge and Square Trio have teamed up to sponsor a two-prong contest to allow the classic gaming community to contribute to the game. The first part of the contest is to create alternate player icon graphics. The second part of the contest is to dream up player rankings that are displayed to the player upon completion of the game (in a manner similar to Star Raiders). You can learn more about the contest and how to enter here. Good luck! Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...

AtariAge is proud to announce the release of the previously unavailable Atari 2600 prototype, Ixion. A port of the unreleased 1983 Sega coin-op of the same name, Ixion is an interesting game that doesn't seem to play like anything else in the 2600 library. Your goal in Ixion is to grab the five white squares scattered across the screen and spell the word Ixion before your time runs out. You must shoot or ram a brown sphere, which causes it to move around the screen, revealing hidden tiles that you can then use to navigate about. At the same time you must avoid the enemy drones that are attempting to destroy your ship, as well as the tiles you are unveiling. If you're attending the 2005 Dallas vgXpo, be sure to stop by our booth where we'll be demonstrating Ixion on a real 2600. You can download Ixion here and try your hand at it in your favorite 2600 emulator, read a thorough review of Ixion over at AtariProtos.com, and discuss the game in our Atari 2600 Forum.
